Man steals marked cruiser, leads Ohio officers on 16-minute pursuit before arrest

A man was arrested on several charges after authorities say he stole a marked cruiser and led troopers on a pursuit in Ross County earlier this week, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Before 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, OSHP said a marked Dodge Charger patrol car was stolen as it was left running outside of the Chillicothe Patrol Post. Troopers tracked the car using GPS technology and found it heading south on state Route 772 near milepost 10.

Troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the suspect driver continued driving and a pursuit followed.

OSHP said the suspect driver continued heading south on state Route 772 before turning around in a gas station and heading north toward Chillicothe.

Authorities said officers with the Chillicothe Police Department deployed stop sticks on Paint Street near Cooks Hill Road and the vehicle soon stopped, ending a 16-minute pursuit.

Dash camera video showed a trooper getting out of the patrol vehicle with his gun drawn, ordering the suspect to get out of the car. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Tommy Cantrell Jr., crawled out of the driver’s side window and got on the ground. He was arrested without further incident.

No injuries were reported and there was no other damage to the stolen patrol car, according to OSHP.

Cantrell Jr. is currently being held in the Ross County jail. He was charged with three counts of theft without consent and one count each of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and possessing drug abuse instruments.
