On May 18, 2024, at approximately 8:35 a.m., Greensboro Police Officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Lawndale Drive in Greensboro, after a 911 call for service about a man in the parking lot with a gun. Officer Perez arrived in the area in a fully marked Greensboro Police Department vehicle and encountered Gerald Pinckney in the parking lot of the apartment complex. During the interaction, Pinckney pulled a gun from his rear waistband and began to advance toward Officer Perez.

Officer Perez began to back away to create distance between them, while giving Pinckney multiple commands to drop the weapon and stop. Pinckney continued to advance toward Officer Perez with his gun drawn and then pointed it at Officer Perez. The officer discharged his weapon two times, striking Pinckney. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries. A black "Marksman Repeater" brand BB air pistol, which was used by Pinckney, was collected at the scene. As a result of the investigation, it was determined that Pinckney was the individual who called 911, describing himself with a gun in the parking lot of the apartments prompting the response from police.
