(1989.01.22) The Midnight Express vs The "Original" Midnight Express - WCW
On January 22, 1989, The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane) faced off against a unique challenge in WCW, as they took on *The "Original" Midnight Express* (Dennis Condrey and Randy Rose) in a high-stakes, emotional match that garnered plenty of attention from fans.
This match was not just about wrestling; it was about pride, legacy, and the spirit of competition. The Midnight Express, as fans knew them, had become one of the most beloved tag teams in WCW. Eaton and Lane had a chemistry that made them incredibly successful, and they were managed by the ever-controversial Jim Cornette, who was an essential part of their success. Their combination of athleticism, tag team maneuvers, and Cornette's antics made them a top team in the company.
However, The "Original" Midnight Express, featuring Dennis Condrey and Randy Rose, were the predecessors of the team. Condrey, who had been part of the original Midnight Express with Eaton before Lane replaced him, brought the experience and history that made this match so significant. The matchup itself symbolized the passing of the torch from the old school to the new generation, adding layers to the contest that the fans embraced.
The feud between the two versions of the Midnight Express reached its boiling point in this bout. While both teams had similar styles and the same fundamental tag team approach, they were distinct in terms of their dynamic and fan support. Eaton and Lane were the fan favorites at this point, while Condrey and Rose's version of the Midnight Express represented the past, giving the match a unique undercurrent of competition.
The match was an intense and heated affair, featuring everything fans loved about the Midnight Express: high-flying maneuvers, powerful tag team moves, and plenty of interference from Jim Cornette at ringside. It was a hard-hitting, back-and-forth battle, with both teams pulling out all the stops to claim victory. The tension between the two teams made the match one of the standout moments in WCW during this time period.
Ultimately, the match was a clash of the old and new, and it stands as an important chapter in the history of WCW’s tag team division. The rivalry between the two versions of the Midnight Express remains one of the more memorable storylines of that era.
