GENESIS CHAPTER 38… (Read so that the following lesson will be better comprehended.)
1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
2And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
3And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
4And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
5And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
6And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
7And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.
8And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
9And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
10And the thing which he did displeased the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.
11Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
12And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.
14And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
15When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
16And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
17And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
18And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
19And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.
21Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.
22And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
23And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
24And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
26And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
27And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.
1st Chronicles 5:1-2… “Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright. For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph’s…”
Joseph, the beloved son of the father, has been delivered up and sold to the Gentiles…the Anti-type being Jesus delivered up and sold to the Gentiles to be Crucified. (Isaiah 52:13-53:12) The affairs of Joseph are being orchestrated, and later documented, by the Father in His Word, to later reveal the hidden things/mysteries of His Salvation Plan to the eye of faith in the New Testament understanding of His Son’s Atonement to return the ‘image’ of God in man that had been lost in the Garden. (Luke 24:27, 1st Corinthians 10:6,11, John 5:39)
Joseph, the favored son of the father, and the leading candidate for the firstborn blessing of the Promised Seed, had been dealt with by satan (so he thought), hereafter to be killed or absorbed into the Egyptian/World’s culture.
Judah prevails among Jacob’s sons as the new candidate for the firstborn blessing, while Joseph’s life is obscured. The corruption of the seed of Jacob by the Canaanites due to their willingness to intermarry with the family of Jacob (and being absorbed by them) ever looms, as satan focuses his attention on Judah to frustrate the purposes of God, and Judah succumbs to temptation. God intervenes until Judah’s shame is sorrowfully exposed (of Genesis 37:26-27) and he leaves off in the marriage of Canaanites.
The soon coming famine descending upon the Promised Land answers to satan’s attempt to destroy the line of the Promised Seed (satan being determined to wipe out the seed of Abraham from who the Promised Seed of Genesis 3:15 will come). But the wisdom of God sees past the drought and He purposes for Israel’s family to sojourn into Egypt until a Nation of His chosen seed emerge, able to accomplish His purposes in the Promised Land. God’s autonomy for the chosen family could be safe-guarded in Egypt, where there was an aversion to strangers, and especially shepherds, who were an abomination unto the Egyptians. (See Genesis 46:31-34… “And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me; And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.” Note the purpose in revealing that they were shepherds was so they’d be physically set apart in the Land of Goshen, which is a contributing factor as to what saved them later during the time of the 10 plagues which God smote Egypt with.)
Judah’s actions concerning what he had done to his brother Joseph weighed heavily on him and led him morally to low places, away from his mourning father where he Judah fails in the grace of the faith, that of knowing who he is in Covenant with God… and takes a Canaanite to wife (Genesis 9:25 - as we have already previously considered and expounded upon the danger of who the Canaanites were and God’s ‘why’ in the command not to take wives of them. Thus, Judah was breaking the covenant with Yahweh by marrying her. Regardless, it was at the least a ‘harlotry’ played by Judah against God). The judgement deaths of 2 of 3 of Judah’s seed born of the Canaanite woman led to his sleeping unawares with his daughter-in-law Tamar, from whom came twin sons Pharez the first born, and Zarah. One main significance being that the Holy Spirit records Pharez as the line from which King David and Jesus the Promised Seed should come.
Judah’s story of Chapter 38 intervenes just after and covers most of the 22 years between Joseph’s being sold and the family of Jacob’s going to settle in Egypt’s Goshen. So it is, that 22 years is typically (in type), a picture of the future critical dispensation that includes the time we are living in. Which is to say, that of the time between the First Coming and the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus. That time including the time we live in today in the anti-type, wherein Israel is in spiritual harlotry, outside Covenant fellowship communion with Yahweh (the covenant-keeping God), and being far far less than ‘in their calling’ (which was to be a light and blessing unto the Gentiles). On the contrary, they are stirring up great animosity in the duplicity of their walking in the flesh. Judah’s spiritual darkness speaks to his loss of identity of who he is in Yahweh (which correlates to today’s state of Israel having lost their identity of who they are supposed to be).
GENESIS CHAPTER 38 OF JUDAH’S STORY IS A PARENTHETICAL TYPE (set between Chapter 37 of Joseph’s betrayal and the picking up again of his story in Chapter 39) of the present Dispensation that speaks to Israel’s standing with God since their rejection of Jesus the Christ of God the Father. Chapter 38 then speaks typically to this current Age when God turned to the Gentiles, as typed in Joseph’s being cut off from Israel by his brethren and delivered up to the Gentiles.
Romans Chapters 9-11 reveal unbelieving Israel’s current standing before God beginning around 2000 years ago, after their rejection of Jesus as their Messiah, as a branch having been broken off of an ‘olive tree’… a tree that New Testament Scripture represents as the Abrahamic Covenant and Promises recorded in Genesis 15. The ‘breaking off’ of Israel speaks specifically to Acts 28:28 wherein by the Holy Spirit Paul declared, “Be it known therefore unto you (unbelieving Jews), that the salvation of God (in the Gospel inheritance of the heavenly Kingdom of Christ) is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.” And “they will hear it” speaks to the Gentiles hearing and believing the Gospel of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus the Christ of God, and that they also (along with the believing natural branches) become the seed of Abraham through Jesus “and heirs according to the promise…” Thereby, being grafted into the ‘olive tree’… which is to say, into the Promises of Abraham. From a parallel viewpoint, Jesus is rejected by the Nation of Israel and takes a ‘Bride’ from among the Gentiles, which in type picks up with the resuming of Joseph’s story in Chapter 39.
Joseph preached the Kingdom principles reflected in his dreams which he had shared with his family, that were pridefully rejected by his brethren. (Both Joseph and Jesus spoke the Truth, but their brethren hated them for it.) Jesus came to bring the Kingdom (that would include the heaven of this Earth) to Israel, but His brethren resisted Him… although He had been prophesied from the Garden of Eden as being the One Who would come for 4000 years, Who would deliver man from satan’s grip and the Nation of Israel and establish it has the preeminent Nation of the Earth, over all the Gentiles.
Judah had 2 sons with his Canaanite wife… the meaning of Er’s name being ‘at enmity’ and Onan meaning ‘in iniquity.’ Judah in type is seen out among the Canaanites after the brothers’ betrayal of their father and brother Joseph. Israel, in the anti-type, is also ‘in iniquity’ and ‘at enmity’ with God; their “cup of iniquity” being full. (Genesis 15:16) And that in the shadow of the Crucifixion around 2000 years ago, when the Land spewed them out and they were again scattered among the Gentile Nations (as seen in Israel’s history… see Leviticus 20:22… “Ye shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, whither I bring you to dwell therein, spue you not out.”) … Currently they have, in the last generation plus, been without the Abrahamic Blessing of God, having re-established a Zionist Nation of their own in the Promised Land without repentance. And they will remain scattered and again be scattered out of the Promised Land until just like in the great famine type of Joseph’s day, (the famine being reflective of the antitype of the Last Days before Christ reveals Himself to His brethren… that corresponding soon coming time when the Anti-Christ severely persecutes the Jews in the Land and in the Earth, killing and ravaging millions - Zechariah 13:8-14:2). It is then when, as in the type, Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, so the Messiah Jesus reveals Himself again to His brethren the Jews, who (as in the type) sorrowfully repent and wholeheartedly receive Him as the Kingdom Messiah and rule with Him in the Promised Land as typed in the ‘Land of Goshen’.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And from another perspective, Judah intermingling with the Canaanites is a picture of the redeemed of Jesus Christ who have lost their identity of who they are in Him and “went down… turned aside,” turning an ear to the Canaanites/Hamites.
Moving backward in time to Noah, we will contrast the 3 sons of Noah, who were ‘saved/redeemed’ through the flood. Shem is shown to be spirit-moved and desires to ‘know’ God most intimately. Japheth is satisfied to be in covenant relationship with God and to have His blessings. And Ham, whose name means ‘black,’ is a reference to the conscience being seared over in self-centered callousness towards God, whose sin was one of lack of love (1st Timothy 4:2)… having doctrine but was without communion and love for his father. From his seed came Babel and Egypt… and from his seed came Canaan and the Canaanites and the prophetic curse: “a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.” To this Curse, we can ascribe the material servitude of the Gibeonites (who were Canaanites), who through trickery deceived the invading Israelites into making a “league” or treaty with them that was sworn before God. And so the Israelites were unable to smite them, and they became “…hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the alter of the Lord, even unto this day…” (Joshua 9) They were a stumbling block for Israel. In the anti-type, many redeemed Christians have doctrine but are without love and communion with the Father and have made a truce/a treaty with the Canaanite (old man) within.
But much further than this did the prophesied Curse of Canaan reach, in that the spiritual point of the matter is how historically Canaanites with their darkening religious views cause ‘believers’ (Christians, typed in Shemites and Japethites) to fail in, or worse, fall from, the grace of God, Whose purpose is to reveal and awaken His children in faith in His Word unto who they are in Him. But in just this alone, the Canaanites would not be “a servant of servants unto their brethren,” but overcomers of their brethren. Thus, the spiritual reality in the Curse of God is that their determined nefariousness is used by God to bring awareness to the obstructive darkness of self-centeredness that crouches in the heart of the self-assured, self-assuming, self-approving, self-condoning, self-proclaiming deceived believer (who ‘grade their own paper’ and deceive themselves that they are just fine)… to bring them into the understanding of who they really are, as having been born again from above, having now the divine nature, in order to bring the ‘image’ of God back into the Earth. They can do this by identifying with Him… not only being justified by faith, but walking like Him on the Earth from “faith to faith.” And though we be walking in league with ‘Canaanite’ darkness, we are not forsaken, we are His, bought with a price and greatly loved. And as long as we draw breath on this side of the body’s death He will pursue us that we might awaken to who we are in Him, and once awakened, turn wholeheartedly to Him in faith in His Word and be capacitated in His mercy and grace and begin again walking in faith in the spirit of love, thereby overcoming the flesh.
Jesus said He’d “leave the tares with the wheat.” We need to look inward at ourselves to see who we really are. Is there a Cananaanite in us that has darkened our minds? (a Gibeonite disguised as wheat). Are we only doctrinal hearers, living willfully/without caring, and in self-centered darkness without personal intimacy with God, and thereby presumptuous (meaning; failing to observe what is permitted or appropriate) followers of deceivers… who revive the carnal thinking in the renewed mind of the redeemed caring seeking believer?
Babel was the work of the seed of Ham. Whose principles learned how ‘to rule’ among the brethren in the wisdom of the World. Who has successfully incorporated the ‘thinking’ of the World into the carnal mind of the ‘believer’ in God’s Word (“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”). The Canaanites are those whom Israel (Israel meaning ‘face to face’ in the intimacy of Old Testament faith) are thereby capacitated to overcome, kill, and drive out from the Promised Land. The New Testament redeemed believer’s enlightened understanding is to see the living disguised ‘Canaanites’ (not just as the un-redeemed persecutor of the faith, but oftentimes redeemed brethren and members of your family) as unaware of who they were created to be and unwittingly being used as instruments of satan’s forces… and are to ‘love them to death’ so to speak (‘it is the goodness of God that leads men to repentance’ - Romans 2:4 and Matthew 5:16… “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”). In other words, we are to love the external Canaanite, but crucify/expose and rule over the Canaanite within. We don’t take the tares out to “burn them” as Judah had wanted to do to Tamar in the type.
In that Judah mixes the wrong of one carnal action with the right of another spiritual action, showing the internal darkness and lack of spiritual understanding, and the result is one of shame. Briefly; in explanation of the inward battle for ascendancy between the religious carnal soul; typical of the nature of the ‘Canaanite’/the self-centeredness of old man (Gibeonite) disguised cleverly within; wrapped in the worn garment and shoes of ‘rights’… stealthily presenting himself within to avoid detection and crucifixion by the new man. It is the unwitting wickedness that often spawns in the battle of the caring, but blinded Christian, that is here to be seen. Example: exposure of hidden sins that have been cleverly disguised by religious reasonings that have enabled you to remain something less than you’re redeemed to be. Or pridefully to be ‘right’ at the expense of another having ‘done you wrong’… not realizing even if you are right, you are wrong. For wherever the need to be right is, there is no right-eousness… only disguised unrighteousness… maybe true facts… but that don’t equal Truth… self-centered pridefulness that keeps you from fulfilling the calling to “deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24-27, Mark 10:21) But all the shameful foolish actions of the Father’s ‘redeemed’ are seen first-hand by our God, yet wonderfully and marvelously, He is not so put off with us, in our exposed shame, that He does not cleanse us from all unrighteousness… us who repent in contrite recognition of the darkness of self-centeredness that was ruling over us… gratefully thanking Him for awakening us to who we really are in Him and empowering us to walk in the faith. (A state of not knowing about Him, but knowing Him.)
“And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.” [Genesis 4:4-7]
“Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” [Hebrews 12:11]
The greatest enemy of the Believer is the lurking inward man of the ‘Canaanite;’ the carnal soul. But now having discovered him there, he wholeheartedly repents and is capacitated in now identifying himself in the light of the mercy and grace of God…humbly thankful and forever aware of the clever deceits of self-centeredness… that when we continue to identify ourselves with them, they will keep us from knowing Him.
So it is in this way that the deceived brethren in the Lord who walk in darkness, bring out the stark awareness in the purer of heart, who are caring and seeking to know God, of the need for a deeper work in Christlikeness. And repentantly are immediately restored to that state and place where they may look to obtain the loving mercy and grace/power of the Holy Spirit, seen in the words spoken of Judah when he realized how low he had sunk… “and he knew her again no more.” There is no animosity in the enlightened Believer in Jesus towards the ‘Canaanite’… who in a very real sense has ‘cut wood’ for our self-sacrifice. There is only a thankful awareness in the wonderous works of God to bring His children into a renewed mind of righteousness that we may mature unto holiness unto a promised oneness inheritance in the life after. Their purpose was to awaken us from the blind stupor of foolish darkness in this vapor of fallen life… that soon fades, and we pass into the realities of our very personal creation and reap what we have sown. Which is to say that man fell and lost the image of God, so God sacrificially sent His Son to restore to man the right to wear that image again, for which we are only to believe to receive… but thereafter, being redeemed, having then received His divine nature, we are required to ‘put off’ and ‘put on’ and walk selflessly in that image of love in fruitful service in growing portion here… which means then, either dead or alive, our glory to be determined by Him when He returns.
So it is, that to us who were appointed to be alive today (it being no accident) and having become Christians, that we see the critical time we live in and wonderous purpose for our lives, for which God has set aside a certain number of generations of mankind. A time now coming to a close, that can be typically comprehended from Chapter 38 to be that time corresponding with Israel’s being broken off and set aside. It is now New Testament ‘faith’s’ time of showing forth the “tidings of great Joy.” (Luke 2:10) The fullness of the meaning of that declaration is appointed by God to be understood and realized in this Dispensation… that which represents the core or heart of God’s hidden Salvation Plan. An amazing predetermined specific time dealing with Gentiles (a mysterious time set aside from before the foundation of this World)… this very time between Jesus’ being delivered up to the Gentiles by His brethren, His crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension unto Heaven… and… His promised Second Coming, is the time in which we alive today are given the gift of living, in being privileged to be birthed of a woman (Adam coming together with Eve, the very means by which He set forth from the beginning that He would multiply His great ‘image’ in the World) and then born again from above in the Second Adam in order that we might know who we are in Him and reflect His ‘image’ in this World. Stopping that ‘image’ from manifesting in this World is the only objective of the enemy. (Jeremiah 1:4-9… “Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.”) We aren’t happenstance… we were ordained from before the foundation of the Earth to be priests and prophets to the World (as Jeremiah was) to the extent that we would show the principalities and powers the manifold wisdom of God. May we truly know who we were created to be in Him in this World and walk in ‘the faith,’ that we might live in glory-filled union with Him in the next World.
Ephesians 3:9-19
“And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent (purpose) that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
It is related to Scripture’s “fellowship/kiononia of the mystery”… it is manifest by… “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.” [2nd Corinthians 13:14]
The long and the short of it all is to be living examples of God’s unknown forethought shown in revealed manifold wisdom directly to the rebellious ruling powers of darkness, by redeemed man now born again from above, who is manifesting God’s selfless image in this World, in spite of the fallen self-centered and self-preserving nature of satan that strongly asserts itself within him, having been born first of rebellious fallen Adam into its sin. Thereby, amazingly, condemning sin in the flesh, accomplishing the purposes for which God created man. Which is to say the redeemed man in Christ in living loving fellowship with Him, exercising loving faith in God’s Word in the face of any adversity, therein accessing the grace/power of God, overcoming the satanicly inspired flesh within and without in the maturing loving image of Christ. So that, in the short space of our redeemed lives on the Earth, after our bodies (under the inescapable condemnation of Adam) have died, God assesses those purposes worked out in willing participants at the Judgement seat of Christ for worthiness, to attain the resurrection in glory as the Bride of Christ and realize His predetermined purposes and plan since before man was created… that of putting away the perpetrators of evil forever and setting up the Eternal Kingdom of His Son in righteousness. It is our realized purpose of being yielded to… in the flow of grace.
