A rare winter storm hit the southern United States on January 21, turning the sandy beaches of Florida into a snow-white landscape. For many locals, it was the first time they had seen snow outside their windows.
Pensacola set a new all-time record of 7.6 inches (19.3 cm) of snow, well above the previous record of 3 inches (7.6 cm) set in 1895 during a Gulf storm.
Another record was set in Milton, where 22.4 cm (8.8 in) of snow fell, more than double the previous daily record of 10.2 cm (4 in) set on March 6, 1954.
The storm became a real natural phenomenon for this region.
