Phoenix police release footage of an armed man who died later after less-lethal rounds, arrest

A 33-year-old man who experienced a medical emergency while being taken into custody by Phoenix Police died at the hospital.

The incident happened on Jan. 10 around 2 p.m. near Osborn Road and 39th Avenue.

Phoenix Police officers were trying to take Turrell Dantae Clay, 33, into custody for an outstanding felony warrant.

Clay reportedly ran from officers while armed with a gun. He climbed onto a home's roof, and officers used less than lethal tools to get him down.

"Once Clay was off the roof, officers used physical force during a struggle to get him handcuffed. Once in custody, officers called for paramedics to assess Clay. Phoenix Fire evaluated Clay and released him to officers before leaving the scene," Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower said.

Clay then told officers he was having a hard time breathing, so they drove him to a nearby hospital. He was then taken by "a private ambulance company to a cardiac hospital for advanced care."

During surgery, Clay died.

Phoenix Police didn't say what the outstanding felony warrant was for.

Clay's cause of death is pending as the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office is looking into what happened.
