The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) released body cam video showing an argument between a deputy and Oklahoma Senator Regina Goodwin that started with a traffic stop in downtown Tulsa.
The argument between Goodwin and Tulsa County Deputy Freddy Alaniz started when he pulled her over near East Archer Street and MLK Jr. Boulevard.
In the body cam video, the deputy claims Goodwin ran two stop signs.
When he got out of his car, Goodwin was already standing outside of her vehicle.
After the deputy asked Goodwin more than a dozen times for her driver's license, and she didn’t comply, the deputy placed her into handcuffs.
Goodwin's attorney happened to be there at the traffic stop.
After the deputy let Goodwin out of the handcuffs, Tulsa City Councilor Laura Bellis showed up, and so did Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols.
Two more deputies arrived to assist, but nothing escalated beyond an argument between the deputy and state senator.
In the video, Deputy Alaniz said he would have let her go with a warning had she not argued with him.
"She blatantly ran two stop signs, and I was going to just give her a verbal warning, but her demeanor and the way that she was, I can't have that,” the deputy said in the video.
In the end, the deputy handed Goodwin a $249 ticket.
See the full statement from Nichols' office here:
"Over the weekend on Jan. 11, I had been working at City Hall when a mutual acquaintance called to say one of my colleagues was pulled over for a traffic stop that occurred around the corner," the statement said. "Ms. Goodwin and I were colleagues in the State House of Representatives, and I stopped by at the end of the incident to ensure everyone was okay. When I arrived, the incident had already occurred, a traffic ticket was being written for Ms. Goodwin, and at no point did I interfere or influence the officers involved in the stop. My dad was a police officer, and I have the utmost respect for law enforcement and was thankful for the professional manner of the Sheriff's Office. At the time when this occurred, I showed up as Monroe to the scene and as a former colleague - I did not identify myself as mayor. With the incident already being over, and a ticket in the Senator's hand, everyone went their separate ways.”
If Senator Goodwin chooses to fight the ticket, her court date is set for Feb. 25.
Goodwin represents the district for parts of downtown Tulsa and north Tulsa.
