Asheville, NC (Jan. 24, 2025) — During a press conference at the Asheville Regional Airport, President Donald Trump criticized FEMA's handling of disaster relief following Hurricane Helene, claiming workers were told not to assist residents with Trump signs in front of their homes. He called the alleged bias “a disgrace” and suggested FEMA’s role could be reduced or eliminated, saying, “FEMA has really let us down, let the country down.”

Hurricane Helene devastated the Southern Appalachians after making landfall in Florida last September, causing catastrophic flooding and claiming 102 lives in North Carolina alone. Trump visited the region to meet with victims and tour the damage, vowing to overhaul federal disaster response under his administration.

“The Democrats don’t care about North Carolina,” Trump remarked, criticizing what he called FEMA’s inefficiency. The visit marks Trump’s first trip since his second inauguration, with plans to tour wildfire damage in California later this week.
