Considered the seminal event before the 9/11 terrorist attack, Al Qaeda suicide bombers struck the USS Cole off the coast of Yemen in October 2000. The attack killed 17 sailors and injured nearly 40 others.

A Saudi national, Abd al-Nashiri, is still facing terrorism charges for allegedly orchestrating the attack. When our team was in the high security court this week, we counted about a dozen at the defense table, including military and civilian lawyers as well as support staff.

The total cost of these military commissions, including the Cole case, is estimated at $100-$120 Million annually.

This is the kind of legal power most Americans can only wish for.
