St. Pope Pius V is celebrated for his key role in the Counter-Reformation. He is best known for promulgating the Roman Missal, which standardized the Mass, and for his vigorous opposition to Protestantism, including excommunicating Queen Elizabeth I of England. Canonized in 1712, his sainthood honors his deep faith, reforms within the Church, and efforts to defend Catholicism during a tumultuous period.
