Arizona, the 48th state to join the United States, has a rich history that reflects a blend of Indigenous cultures and European exploration. Originally home to tribes such as the Hopi and Navajo, the region saw Spanish explorers in the 16th century, leading to the establishment of missions. Following the Mexican-American War, Arizona became a U.S. territory in 1848 and achieved statehood in 1912. The discovery of gold and silver in the late 19th century spurred economic growth and settlement, particularly in towns like Tombstone. Today, Arizona is known for its stunning landscapes, including the Grand Canyon, and a diverse cultural heritage that continues to shape its identity.
