Video Shows Brave Officers Rushing To Evacuate Animal Shelter In Path Of Wildfire

Officers with the Vacaville Police Department are being hailed as heroes this week after body cam footage went viral showing them rushing to evacuate an animal shelter that was in the path of a wildfire.

The officers were able to rescue of dozens of animals as the Nelson Fire approached the Solano SPCA in Vacaville, California on Friday night. Officers raced against the clock to rescue the 67 animals, one of which was a python, that were trapped in the shelter.

“We had a short window to get out as many animals as we could before we knew we had to evacuate,” Officer Carly Stone told reporters. “I ended up with three dogs in my car that night. I had nowhere to put the dogs, they seemed to be happy to be with me, so we just went to work and started evacuating houses for a few hours until I could get them back into the SPCA.”

None of the animals were hurt in any way, and they are all now safely back at the shelter. Some of them are even in the process of being adopted!

“We’ll probably end up with a total of 12-15 animals that are with their rescuers,” said Debbie Dillon, who works with the SPCA.

God bless these brave officers for taking the time to rescue these animals! While helping humans obviously takes priority in wildfire situations, we are glad to see that the animals are not being forgotten!
