"A stylish, ghostly LA noir." Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film called The Dead Thing, made by filmmaker Elric Kane – who you might also recognize as a voice on the "Pure Cinema" podcast. The film premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, and it also played at FrightFest and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. A young woman lost in a series of meaningless connections falls in love with a charismatic & sensitive man, who hides a dark secret that turns into a dangerous obsession. Another quick synopsis: A young woman ghosted by her charming dating app suitor refuses to let go of their relationship. The horror stars Blu Hunt as the main character Alex, Katherine Hughes, John Karna, Brennan Mejia, Joey Millin, Ben Smith-Petersen, and Aerial Washington. This trailer doesn't fully reveal what's going on or what's up with this guy, which makes it all the more mysterious. Is he dead or something? Or some kind of demon she conjured to work through her loneliness? Only one way to find out...

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Elric Kane's horror film The Dead Thing, direct from YouTube:

Alex (starring Blu Hunt) is trapped in a downward spiral of shallow hookups and tepid connections, but she is caught off guard when her dating app swipes lead her into the arms of a mysterious, charming young man named Kyle. Despite their passionate night, when the sun rises, the mystery man is nowhere to be found. Alex then sets out to find the one person who made her feel alive. Through her own investigation, she reconnects with Kyle, but also digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences. The Dead Thing is directed by American indie filmmaker Elric Kane, part of the "Pure Cinema" podcast for the New Beverly, and director of the films Kissy Kissy and Campbell Walker Is a Friend of Mine previously, plus many other shorts. The screenplay is written by Elric Kane and Webb Wilcoxen. Produced by Matt Mercer and Monte Yazzie. This initially premiered at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival last year. Shudder will debut Kane's The Dead Thing streaming on Shudder starting February 14th, 2025 coming soon. Who wants to watch this?

What happens in The Dead Thing trailer?
The video features Hunt as Alex, a young woman who is ghosted by someone she feels a connection with. However, as she searches for him, strange things start happening to Alex. Besides Hunt, the cast also includes Katherine Hughes, John Karna, Brennan Mejia, Joey Millin, Ben Smith-Petersen, and Aerial Washington.

The Dead Thing is directed by Elric Kane, who co-wrote the screenplay with Webb Wilcoxen. In addition to leading the cast, Hunt is also set as an executive producer alongside Rebekah McKendry. It is produced by Matt Mercer and Monte Yazzie, with Iona Vasile and Star Rosencrans serving as the director of photography and editor, respectively.

“Alex is trapped in a downward spiral of shallow hookups and tepid connections, but she is caught off guard when her dating app swipes lead her into the arms of a mysterious, charming young man Kyle,” reads the official synopsis. “Despite their passionate night, when the sun rises, the mystery man is nowhere to be found. Alex then sets out to find the one person who made her feel alive. Through her investigation, she reconnects with Kyle, but also digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences.”
Modern dating horror gets a Groundhog Day-style twist in the trailer for The Death Thing, Shudder's upcoming movie from writer/director Elric Kane.

In the clip above we see Alex (Blu Hunt) doomswiping on a dating app before she meets a man (Ben Smith-Petersen) she has an instant connection with. The problem? The next time she meets him, he appears to have no recollection of their first date.

Katherine Hughes and John Karna also star in what looks like a creepy and psychological take on modern dating app culture.

The Dead Thing is streaming on Shudder from Feb. 14.
Dating is brutal, right? In Shudder's upcoming The Dead Thing, it's also terrifying. The streaming platform has now released a trailer for the upcoming horror outing. The indie feature debuted at the Fantasia Film Festival last year before making its way to London's FrightFest and the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. While there will be plenty of Valentine's Day movie offerings across streamers, The Dead Thing promises a scary date night when it lands on Shudder on February 14.

Directed by Elric Kane (best known for hosting the podcasts Pure Cinema and Colors of the Dark), the indie thriller follows a young woman named Alex (Blu Hunt), who is disillusioned with dating until she meets a charming man named Kyle (Ben Smith-Petersen). A passionate night ensues, but things get eerie quickly after Kyle vanishes. The Dead Thing's official synopsis teases that once Alex reconnects with Kyle, she "digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences." Check out the erotic and mysterious trailer below.

The trailer leaves us with more questions than answers, as any good trailer should, with The Dead Thing looking like the perfect slow-burn film that gradually builds tension. This brand of horror does not appeal to everyone, but it's impressed critics thus far: it boasts an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (from 25 reviews). Critics praise a compelling story (seriously, who doesn't have a dating horror story or two to share?), a brilliant performance by Hunt (who you may remember for her roles as Inadu in the CW's The Originals or Dani Moonstar in The New Mutants), and its visual style.

Modern Dating Horror Stories Fueled 'The Dead Thing'
Although most of us have probably never dated someone with a "ghastly supernatural secret," Kane thinks audiences will find The Dead Thing relatable. During a recent interview with PEOPLE, Kane discussed what led him to the movie's premise:

"I worked in the very office the film is set in and a co-worker was always recounting her many adventures of online dating and the various apps and strange encounters she had […] It sounded exhausting but I wrote down a note on my phone 'Internet Dating App Horror??' and a few months later it led to a full idea for the film.

I think people will relate to the alienation of dating and I think people often find themselves in sudden relationships that are empty or soul sucking as a way to escape the loneliness of modern dating and the fear of being alone."
