Have Baptist Churches Existed Since Christ?

One of the most common challenges raised against the idea of independent, Bible-believing churches existing outside of Roman Catholicism since the time of Christ is the demand for “proof.” However, history does not operate on absolute proof in the modern scientific sense—especially when dealing with events and people from thousands of years ago. Instead, we rely on evidence. Just as no one can produce a signed birth certificate proving that Alexander the Great existed, we know he lived because of the overwhelming historical record. Likewise, there is ample evidence that churches existed independently of what became the Roman Catholic Church, holding to biblical principles and resisting any form of ecclesiastical hierarchy beyond that of the local church.
