OPUS Trailer (2025) Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich

“There’s no cult like celebrity” goes the tagline for “Opus,” Mark Anthony Green’s new thriller. Looking like a cross of “Don’t Blink Twice,” “The Menu,” and “Almost Famous,” the film from A24, out in theaters March 14, is about a reclusive rock star named Moretti (John Malkovich) who’s suddenly releasing a new album after almost 30 years. Watch the trailer for “Opus” below.

As part of his album release, Moretti invites select press, including Ayo Edebiri, Juliette Lewis, and Murray Hamilton to his remote compound where he lives like a prince. And he draws them into a dangerous game where his motives are sinister at best. Edebiri’s movie career has taken off since she rocketed to stardom with FX’s “The Bear.” “Opus” follows her roles in “Bottoms,” “Theater Camp,” and “The Sweet East,” and voice role in “Inside Out 2.”

“Opus” is the feature film directorial debut of Mark Anthony Green, who directs from his own script. Amber Midthunder, Stephanie Suganami, and Tatanka Means round out the cast.

The official synopsis from A24 is as follows: “A young writer (Ayo Edebiri) is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star (John Malkovich) who mysteriously disappeared thirty years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan.”

The role follows Edebiri’s directorial debut on the third season of “The Bear.” She helmed the episode “Napkins,” focused on Liza Colon-Zayas’s Tina. And before anything else she took a class for first-time television directors at the DGA led by Paris Barclay, Keith Powell, and Dr. Valerie Weiss.

“That class is probably one of the coolest, greatest things I’ve ever done,” Edebiri told IndieWire’s Proma Khosla. “The thing that I walked away with the most was that the only wrong way to direct — well, there’s probably a lot of wrong ways, but beyond not communicating and not being open — is not finding your way. If you try to do somebody else’s way, or work somebody else’s way, it’s not going to work. Our instructors were so helpful with really illustrating their differences — and that they were successful with their differences — and so encouraging us to find our our ways of communicating, stressing the fact that you always have to be communicating.”

Ayo Edebiri portrays a journalist who inadvertently finds herself at a cult gathering in her new A24 movie.

A24 has released the trailer for Opus, in which The Bear Emmy-winner Edibiri, 29, costars with John Malkovich. Malkovich portrays a massively famous — but reclusive — musician named Moretti, who invites Edibiri's character, Ariel Ekton, to spend a weekend at his compound to participate in an "exclusive listening experience" for his new album.

Upon arrival at Moretti's compound, Ariel meets a group of celebrities and journalists and quickly grows disturbed as people at the compound begin acting strange. When Ariel asks others present whether they are concerned, she is not taken seriously — and things eventually appear to take a turn for the dangerous.

Mark Anthony Green is a writer and director whose short Trapeze, U.S.A. won awards at several festivals. He began writing for GQ when he was 19 and joined the publication full time as a writer and editor after graduating from Morehouse College.

The Sundance Film Festival describes the film in the following way: “A young writer is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan.

Ayo Edebiri poster for Opus
“Mark Anthony Green’s feature debut is a bold, fun, and flashy pop-horror. Ayo Edebiri delivers as the meek yet hungry journalist Ariel — her unique charm radiating alongside a distinct final-girl prescience. John Malkovich is effervescent and hypnotic as Moretti, a deified global phenomenon making a dramatically malevolent reintroduction.

“Amidst eye-catching, synthy musical numbers and the enigmatic desert compound, the facade of civility gradually erodes between the pair, revealing the underbelly of a tense, psychosocial game of cat and mouse. Opus offers an electric, clever indictment of the literal cult of celebrity, presenting characters and dangers within a symphonic ambience — giving way to a foreboding ease through which power is generated and embedded within pop culture.

Ayo Edebiri (/ˈaɪoʊ əˈdɛbəri/ Eye-oh ə-DEB-ər-ee;[1] born October 3, 1995) is an American actress, comedian, and television writer. Since 2022 she has played chef Sydney Adamu in the comedy-drama series The Bear, for which she won a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award, as well as a nomination for a Directors Guild of America Award for directing the episode "Napkins".[2]

Edebiri has been a writer and voice actor on Big Mouth since 2020 and was a writer for the comedy series What We Do in the Shadows in 2022. In 2023, she voiced roles in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and starred in the comedies Theater Camp and Bottoms. She had another voice role in Inside Out 2 (2024).

Early life and education
Edebiri was born in Boston on October 3, 1995[3] to a Bajan mother and Nigerian father.[4][5] She is an only child, and she grew up in the Dorchester neighborhood.[6] Her family is Pentecostal and she regularly attended church services with her parents.[7][8] She first became interested in comedy through her eighth grade drama class leading her to join the improv club at Boston Latin School.[8] She went to New York University, where she initially intended to study teaching before switching her major to dramatic writing.[4][6][9] During her junior year of college, Edebiri began pursuing a comedy career and became an intern at the Upright Citizens Brigade.[4][5]

Career
2014–2021: Early work
In 2014, Edebiri acted in an episode of the series Defectives. She started her career as a stand-up comedian and performed a stand-up set on Comedy Central's Up Next.[10][4] Her scripted digital series Ayo and Rachel Are Single began airing on Comedy Central in May 2020, which she cowrote and co-starred in with her friend and fellow comedian Rachel Sennott.[11] Edebiri made her film debut in the 2020 comedy-drama Shithouse, in an uncredited role.[12] She co-hosts a podcast called Iconography with Olivia Craighead which features interviews with guests in conversation about their shared personal icons.[4][11] The podcast is produced by Forever Dog and the second season was released in 2020.[13]

A television writer, Edebiri wrote for the sole seasons of The Rundown with Robin Thede and NBC's Sunnyside.[14][4] She joined the writing staff of Big Mouth for the show's fourth season.[15] After Jenny Slate stepped down from voicing the character Missy so the role could be played by a Black actress, Edebiri auditioned and was selected as the replacement in August 2020.[14][16] Her voice acting as the character began at the end of the show's fourth season.[14] She was a writer and actress in Dickinson's second season on Apple TV+, where she first worked with Christopher Storer, who later created The Bear.[7] She acted in a supporting role in the 2022 film adaptation of the Jennifer E. Smith young adult novel Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between.[17]

2022–present: breakthrough and The Bear
In 2022 Edebiri gained wider prominence as a main cast member on the FX on Hulu series The Bear.[18] She received a Golden Globe Award, Primetime Emmy Award, and Independent Spirit Award in addition to nominations from the Gotham Awards and the Critics' Choice Awards for her role as Sydney Adamu, an ambitious young sous chef.[19][20][21] Lucy Mangan of The Guardian praised her performance declaring her "magnificent" and "still lighting up and punching up every scene she is in".[22] Edebiri made her directorial debut in the season three episode "Napkins" (2024). In January 2025 she was nominated for a Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – Comedy Series for the episode.[23][24][25]

Also in 2022, she became a writer and consulting producer on the FX series What We Do in the Shadows, earning a nomination for the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Episodic Comedy for the episode "Private School".[26] Edebiri coproduced, appeared and served as a writer on Mulligan (2023), an animated series for Netflix.[27] She provided voice acting as Ham in the Netflix interactive special We Lost Our Human.[28] In the same year, she appeared in an episode of the Mel Brooks Hulu series History of the World, Part II and the Black Mirror episode "Joan Is Awful".[29][30] She also voiced roles in the Disney Channel series Kiff and the Max series Clone High.[31][32] Later in 2023, she voiced Glory Grant in the animated superhero sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse[33] and April O'Neil in the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.[34] Both films were financially successful.[35][36]

In 2023, she starred in the mockumentary comedy film Theater Camp alongside Molly Gordon and Ben Platt. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to positive reviews, with many comparing it to the films of Christopher Guest. Later that year, she guest starred in Abbott Elementary and starred in the teen sex comedy Bottoms opposite Rachel Sennott. Bottoms premiered at South by Southwest.[37] Katie Walsh of The Los Angeles Times wrote, "Sennott and Edebiri deliver two of the funniest performances of the year".[38] She appeared in the film The Sweet East directed by Sean Price Williams, which premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival at the Directors' Fortnight.[39][40]

She won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2024; as Quinta Brunson won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series that same year, that was the first year that two Black actresses won the two female comedy acting categories in the Primetime Emmys.[41]

Edebiri hosted Saturday Night Live with musical guest Jennifer Lopez in 2024.[42] In a sketch Edebiri indirectly acknowledged having criticized Lopez previously on the podcast Scam Goddess.[43][44] She voiced Envy in the Pixar film Inside Out 2 (2024), a sequel to the first film.[45]

Edebiri appeared as a crazed woman in the music video for Tyler, The Creator's 2024 single, 'Noid'.

Edebiri will star in the A24 horror film Opus, co-starring John Malkovich.[46] She will play a supporting role in James L. Brooks's comedy film Ella McCay.[47]

Personal life
Edebiri is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and has frequently canvassed for the organization.[48][49] She identifies as queer.[50][51]

In the mid-2020s a running joke led to Edebiri being described as an "honorary Irishwoman".[52][53][54][55] During a red carpet interview in 2023, she said in jest that she had played the role of "Jenny the Donkey" in the film The Banshees of Inisherin and in the process developed a deep connection with Ireland. The video clip of her telling the joke quickly went viral amongst Irish social media users, who leaned into the joke by saying as fact that Edebiri was Irish. She reciprocated and began referring to Ireland as her home country in media interviews, thanking Ireland in award speeches, and generally playing into the idea of herself being Irish. In turn this continued to increase her popularity in Ireland and led to her "adoption" as an "honorary Irishwoman".[52][53][54][55]
