Red Dye No. 3, also known as erythrosine, was found in an array of popular foods, providing a bright cherry-red color to products like Brach's Candy Corn, Pez, Peeps, Nerds, SweeTarts, Fruit-By-The-Foot, Dubble Bubble gum, as well as in cereals, maraschino cherries used in cocktails and desserts, strawberry-flavored milkshakes, and even in some nutrition shakes like PediaSure. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently banned this synthetic dye from foods, drinks, and ingested drugs, citing concerns over its potential to cause cancer in lab animals, a decision influenced by decades of advocacy from consumer groups and health organizations. The ban was enacted under the Delaney Clause, which mandates the prohibition of any food additive found to cause cancer in humans or animals, and manufacturers have until January 2027 to reformulate their products to exclude Red Dye No. 3.
