In the Mayan language, Chichén Itzá means "mouth of the well of the water wise men", referring to the Sacred Cenote, the large natural well that the inhabitants of the region considered one of the main entrances to the underworld, seat of important gods, such as the of the rain. Furthermore, the name of the site alludes to the Itzaes, powerful mythical-historical lords of the city during the time of its growth and heyday.
