Janneke after 8 Years

This pastel drawing ‘Model Session – 18-01-25 – 1’ is the first live model pastel drawing I made this year. Back in 2017 we invited model Janneke and today she returned after almost 8 years. Back then, in the first session I made a cubist drawing. It’s always interesting to follow a model and see how time progresses, in bodies and in artistic styles on paper. A little older maybe yet very interesting. Model Bo we had last December is more than 30 years younger. Nevertheless, studying anatomy in the same lighting settings and the same bar stool, may offer great insights in contrasts. I must say, the lighting in municipal centre ‘De Blauwe Tram’ in Leidschendam kind of grew on me. Together with the Hahnemühle Dürer Ingres-Bütten Night Blue paper it’s a perfect match. The light applied via Conté white chalks is extactly what I want.

Focal Point

This first session’s result I kept quite quite simple. One thing that I might have not yet stated is that Saturday afternoon sessions always cause a rather slow start. The reason is that I worked all week. That is, for an artist like me – from 9 AM to 12 PM. Add an extra Saturday morning of teaching art class and you get the picture. Somehow I don’t feel like engaging in daring artistic experiments right away. Instead I usually seek for the right proportions. Doing pastels is the right medium, using easy erasable charcoal lines and dots first. Then I put all white planes down in a couple of minutes only. This gives me more than enough time within an hour to check all proportional miscalculations and other mishaps. It also gives me room for dertermining where the focus is at. On the top side in this case.
