It’s rare for a studio to become a brand, but A24 has managed it. Since its humble beginnings as a New York-based distribution company founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in August 2012, A24 has become synonymous with quality for film lovers, the place that releases the must-see indies everyone is talking about.

A24’s first film was the little-seen and little-loved “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” from Roman Coppola, which hit theaters in February 2013 to muted fanfare. But the movie that really put the company on the map was “Spring Breakers,” Harmony Korine’s wild crime comedy that released in March that same year and established many of the conventions associated with the brand: Artful neon cinematography, shocking content and stylized violence, and cool-kid cleverness suffused in every frame. That’s not to say every movie that the company distributes is like “Spring Breakers” — the majority aren’t — but its release made A24 hip in a way a film distribution company usually isn’t.

Since 2013, A24 has grown quickly to release an impressive slate of acclaimed movies each year. It’s become the destination for great arthouse horror, putting out modern genre classics such as “Under the Skin,” “The Witch,” and “Green Room.” It’s released Oscar winners and nominees, like “Room,” “Ex Machina,” “Lady Bird,” and “Aftersun.”

In 2016, the company began branching into production, and the first film it produced — Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” — won Best Picture in a landmark Oscar moment. Since then, its production output has exploded, and the films A24 has had a hand in financing and backing — “Hereditary,” “Eighth Grade,” “Uncut Gems,” “The Green Knight,” and “Past Lives” — have been wildly acclaimed. And with 2023’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” — another Oscar winner — A24 had their biggest hit yet, as the Daniels’ action comedy grossed over $100 million worldwide.

So what’s next for A24? Looking ahead in 2025, there’s plenty of interesting films to get excited about, including movies from acclaimed directors like Spike Lee, David Lowery, Benny and Josh Safdie (separately, not together), Ari Aster, and many more. That’s not even getting into other projects still in development, which ensure that A24 and its films should remain as buzzy as they’ve always been.

Here’s a look at all the films currently in the works at A24, listed in order of expected release; titles without a release window are listed alphabetically. This list will be updated as new films and release dates are announced.

“Parthenope” (February 7, 2025)
After premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last May, and releasing theatrically in France and Italy last year, “Parthenope” is finally premiering in U.S. theaters this winter. The latest film from “Great Beauty” director Paolo Sorrentino, “Parthenope” and its story of a beautiful young woman’s coming of age in Naples received mixed reviews upon its Cannes premiere.

'The Legend of Ochi'

“The Legend of Ochi” (February 28, 2025)
A fantasy adventure, “The Legend of Ochi” follows a young girl (Helena Zengel) in a remote village taught to fear a mysterious race of forest creatures known as the Ochi. When she encounters a docile ochi left behind by its pack, she goes on a journey to reunite it with its parents. The film is the directorial debut of Isaiah Saxon and also features Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and Willem Dafoe in its cast. It will premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival before its February premiere date.

“On Becoming a Guinea Fowl” (March 7, 2024)
Zambian-Welsh director Rungano Nyoni received raves last May when her film “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl” premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The family drama, about a young woman who discovers secrets around her middle-class Zambian clan as they prepare for the funeral of her uncle, will finally release in American theaters this March.

“Opus” (March 14, 2025)
Ayo Edebiri stars in “Opus,” a new horror film from A24 opening this March and the directorial debut of Mark Anthony Green. She plays a young writer invited to the compound of a legendary musician (John Malkovich), where she becomes embroiled in a twisted plan. Amber Midthunder and Juliette Lewis also star in the film, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marty Supreme
“Marty Supreme” (December 25, 2025)
With a $70 million budget, “Marty Supreme” is by a large margin the most expensive film A24 has ever made. That’s intriguing given the premise doesn’t necessarily scream big budget: The film is reportedly a table tennis story inspired by the career of late champion of the sport Marty Reisman, albeit heavily fictionalized. Timothée Chalamet will play Marty, while Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A’zion, Penn Jillette, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher round out the cast, but the real draw is Josh Safdie, in his first film since the breakup of his partnership with brother Benny, behind the camera.

“Death of a Unicorn” (TBA 2025)
The feature directorial debut of Alex Scharfman, “Death of a Unicorn” promises to be part horror film, part class satire. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega star as a father and daughter who unexpectedly run over a unicorn while en route to a crisis management summit thrown by the father’s boss. The body of the creature is taken by the company and exploited for its curative properties, to disastrous consequences. Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, Will Poulter, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, Jessica Hynes, and Steve Park round out the cast.

Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd in Friendship
“Friendship” (TBA 2025)
A24 acquired “Friendship” out of the 2024 Toronto Film Festival, where it played in the Midnight Madness program. The feature directorial debut of Andrew DeYoung, the cringe comedy stars “I Think You Should Leave” star Tim Robinson as an awkward man who obsessively pursues a friendship with his charming neighbor, played by Paul Rudd. Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra and Billy Bryk round out the supporting cast.

“Highest 2 Lowest” (TBA 2025)
Spike Lee’s track record with remakes is mixed — there’s the dull and uninspired “Oldboy” rehash, and the weird but undeniably interesting “Ganja & Hess” redux “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus.” His latest film has some tough pedigree to live up to: It’s an American take on Akira Kurosawa’s classic kidnapping drama “High and Low,” widely considered one of the Japanese auteur’s greatest films. But watching Lee adapt the film promises to be interesting, and his take “Highest 2 Lowest” benefits from serving as a reunion with his frequent star Denzel Washington, who leads a wild supporting cast that includes Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice, and ASAP Rocky. The film will receive a theatrical release by A24 before releasing on Apple TV+.

“Mother Mary” (TBA 2025)
After receiving critical acclaim for Arthurian fantasy “The Green Knight,” David Lowery is back at A24 with a wildly different project — pop star melodrama “Mother Mary.” Anne Hathaway plays the titular superstar in the film, which will focus on her relationship with a fashion designer played by Michaela Coel. Hunter Schaefer, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs also star in the movie, which will feature original songs written by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX.

'The Smashing Machine'

“The Smashing Machine” (TBA 2025)
Josh Safdie isn’t the only Safdie brother coming out with a solo feature effort this year. Following his acting roles in “Oppenheimer,” “Licorice Pizza,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “The Curse,” Benny Safdie is returning to the opposite side of the camera to direct and write “The Smashing Machine,” a biographical sports drama about Mark Kerr, a wrestler and MMA fighter who struggled with substance abuse during his career. The primary draw for the film if you aren’t familiar with Kerr? He’s played by Dwayne Johnson, making a rare foray into serious dramatic acting. Emily Blunt costars as Kerr’s ex-wife Dawn Staples.

"Warfare" (TBA 2025)

“Warfare” (TBA 2025)
Just a year after dividing audiences with “Civil War,” a war film about a divided United States, Alex Garland is returning to the subject of the military — this time tackling the recent past instead of the near future. Co-directed by Ray Mendoza and based heavily on Mendoza’s real experiences as a Navy SEAL during the U.S. invasion of Iraq, “Warfare” is set in 2006 and follows a group of SEALs during a mission in real-time. A large ensemble cast of up-and-coming actors lead the film, including Cosmo Jarvis, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Noah Centineo, Henry Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton.

It may be 28 Years Later, but the long-gestating Danny Boyle and Alex Garland zombie apocalypse sequel looks worth the wait on the evidence of the first trailer.

Accompanied by the unsettling sound of a Taylor Holmes recording of Rudyard Kipling’s war poem “Boots,” the trailer features a post-apocalyptic world in which Aaron Taylor-Johnson walks the green fields of England wielding a bow and arrow.

Coming more than two decades after 28 Days Later, the new movie appears to feature Cillian Murphy‘s Jim in zombie form, looming over Jodie Comer‘s character, after apparently being infected with the “Rage Virus.”

The Oscar winner’s name is not included on the promotional posters, meaning Murphy is unlikely to be a major part of the sequel, though he does serve as an executive producer. Murphy did not feature in the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later.

The new spot offers more detail about the drama that begins with a dead Commander in Chief. There’s also the addition of a mysterious black box.

The series drops Jan. 28.

Up until this point, the premise of Fogelman’s new drama has not been revealed. Hulu is finally sharing a logline, but it doesn’t represent what you’ll see in the trailer, which is a dead Commander in Chief whose chief protector may or may not have murdered him.

It premieres Jan. 28.

Here’s the logline, which suggests a very twisty premise: “Paradise is set in a serene, wealthy community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals. But this tranquility explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high stakes investigation unfolds.”

That cast includes Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Michelle Meredith, Cassidy Freeman Gerald McRaney, Krys Marshall, Charlie Evans and Jon Beavers.

The series, produced by 20th Television, is executive produced by Fogelman, Brown, Jess Rosenthal, John Hoberg, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra and Steve Beers.

Early on in their accaimed TV series adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” Netflix and Bogota-based producer Dynamo (“Narcos”) set out to find Macondo.

First, writers, producers and location managers visited Aracateca, the Nobel Prize winner’s birthplace on Colombia’s Caribbean seaboard. Later they toured Colombia’s Guajira peninsula, its Pacific Coast and Ciénega Grande swamp, capital Bogota’s province and Tolima in the high Andes.

As they had always imagined, they never found Macondo – in the sense of one single village which could easily readapted into the icon magical realism. The idea, however, from the very beginning was to build Macondo from scratch.

Popular on Variety
Most of the action of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” – the novel and series – in reality takes place in a relatively small strip of territory in Colombia’s far Caribbean north.

Directed by Alex García and Laura Mora, the series’ story begins in a ranchería – a traditional village somewhere on the plains outside Riohacha on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. It then crosses the soaring Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and remains for most of the rest of Season 1 in Macondo north-west of the Sierra, in the Ciénaga Grande, but so near to the Caribbean Sea that the later discovery of its proximity breaks Macondo founder José Arcadio Buendía’s spirit.

In contrast, the series’ locations range from Guajira in the north to Alvarado, Tolima, in central Colombia’s Andes. Reasons for that range explain very much the locations of “One Hundred Years of Solitude. 10 takes and photos:

Looking for Macondo
Macondo couldn’t be any old place, however. Locations are very much a matter of logistics. “The biggest challenge was to find locations that were visually incredible but also practicable,” says Macondo location manager, Cristiano D. Toro. “One request I made was that Macondo had to be near an airport. But most importantly, we’re a very large production. If I have problems with crew, cameras, for example, we needed to be able to move easily, and given our long shooting days, it’s always best to have Bogotá near,” recalls Carolina Caicedo, executive producer of of “One Hundred Years of Solitude.”

Macondo Ground Zero: A Wild Tree Hunt
Macondo also wouldn’t be built quite from scratch. In a drive for authenticity, art director Eugenio Caballero requested any Macondo to have high mountains behind and be built around a real-life big tree which would end up at the center of Macondo’s square. And it couldn’t be any tree either. It needed to allow enough space between it and key buildings such the school and church, and catch sunrise light one side and evening sun on the other, remembers Emerson Espinosa, also “One Hundred Years of Solitude” location manager. A large caucho cartagénero was found on the Arizona ranch, vast green pastures outside Alvarado, less than an hour’s drive from Tolima capital Ibagúe, itself an hour’s flight to Bogóta. Colombia’s real life steep-backed Western Andes rise behind Alvarado. Topping them in the series are the snow capped peaks of Sierra Nevada de la Marta, added by VFX. Macondo – its backlot site for the two biggest sets at least, including the biggest, capturing Macondo in its largest splendor from EP. 4 to Ep. 6 in Season 1 – had been found.

It began here: A caucho tree in a field, around which Macondo’s most expansive version was built.

Creating Locations
Which aren’t explicitly in the novel.

One example: “On Sunday, effectively, Rebeca arrived. She had made a difficult journey from Manaure,” Garcia Márquez writes in “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” chapter three. He makes no explicit mention, however, of the feature for which Manaure, on Colombia’s northernmost La Guajira coast, is best known: Its extraordinary salt flats.

When Netflix optioned the novel’s adaptation rights in 2019, García Marquez’s widow, Mercedes Barcha, has widow and sons Rodrigo García (the distinguished director, “Albert Nobbs”) and Gonzalo García Barcha insisted that the series was shot in Colombia by Colombians. Rodrígo García also gave directors Alex García and Laura Mora total creative freedom.

Naturally enough, in a supremely visual (and more narrative-driven) medium such as TV, they often take it. “Somebody’s coming,” an adolescent José Aureliano predicts at the end of Ep. 2. Its climax is dramatic but also aesthetic: a shot of the extraordinary real-life rose-tinted salt plains of Manaure. Cut to Ep. 3’s opening as a cart and donkey are driven across the same salt plains, this time chalk white and as hard as ice, carrying Rebeca. Netflix popularised the idea that series have to grab the attention in its first few minutes. Here, the series has done so in a one-minute sequence thanks to an extraordinary location.

One Hundred Year’s Industrial Agenda
There’s also an industrial agenda at work. Colombia is already South America’s biggest big international shoot hub, with 64 projects approved over 2023-24 amounting to a total $249.8 million in investment in the country. The best way to encourage more shoots to come is by proclaiming Colombia’s production capacity in a banner series which captures global attention. Enter “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Over two-parts and 16 hour the series forefronts one of the main reasons why international shoots set up in any country: the stunning impact variety of locations. “The objective of the series in part is to show Colombia in all its diversity,” says Espinosa.

A street corner building backed by modern high-rises, Ibagué, used for Arcadio home when he ruled in Macondo.
Finding Macondo All Over Colombia

So it’s no coincidence that the series finds Macondo all over Colombia, in a total 32 provinces (departamentos), whether a street-corner building backed by modern high-rises (above), or a perfectly preserved dining room in a private house (below) or the facade of an 1890’s pharmacy. The first’s dining room (below) was used to shoot scenes in Arcadio’s house. It’s not so dissimilar to Ursula’s dining room either (below). Director Alex García shot interiors in the pharmacy while its facade helped inspire that of anarchist Alirio Noguera’s shop in Ep. 2.

A real-life traditional dining room in Colombia

The Dazzling Light of the Caribbean
And “A Hundred Years of Solitude” proclaims the diversity of Colombian locations. The biggest location outside Macondo in terms of series time spent there, is cousins José Arcadio and Úrsula’s native village where they wed in Ep. 1., which begins the series broad narrative. Created adapting or building for scratch huts in an old ranchería near Valledupar, the main town east of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the opening scenes captures the climate of the Caribbean seaboard. Throwing open the shutters of a window (Ep. 1, minute 7.48), Úrsula reveals the dazzling light, blue skies and low-lying trade wind cumulus clouds of the Caribbean seaboard (above) plus other huts simulating the mud, cactus trunk wood and palm roofs of a Guajira Wayuu ranchería, notes Toro.

”Smooth White Rocks Like Prehistoric Eggs”
It’s one of García Marquez’s most famous descriptions in the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” ending its second sentence, to describe the bed of the Río Ancho beside on whose banks Macondo was founded. Río Ancho was shot in a river descending from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to the Caribbean Sea near to Dibulla in western La Guajira. Macondo 0-1, as it is called, the rudimentary village of Macondo, was built at Garanchal Ranch, Venadillo, a 20-minute drive north go Alvardo, on the edge of the Magdalena River, Colombia’s longest, in Tolima. But it doesn’t have rocks like dinosaur’s eggs. So Río Ancho scenes, including José Arcadio¡s dream, were shot 700 miles northwards. Locations is the art of the possible.

Photo of Rio Ancho, Dibulla, La Guajira
The Series Highpoint
Though tropical, Colombian capital Bogotá is lodged in high mountains, seeming like Scotland when it rains or hails, a mist enveloping its northern parts. Nowhere is colder and more inhospitable in the whole of Season 1 than Episode’s 1 high mountain moors scenes where José Arcadio’s expedition edges along a path half way up a precipice, a mule slipping into the void. As rain later lashes their tent, José Arcadia assures the shivering rest of the expedition that they’re very near to getting to the sea. These scenes were shot in the Páramo de Chingaza, a national natural park two hours car ride east of Bogotá, whose peaks rise to 13,000 feet. But ease of access remains key. So it’s no coincidence that one of its wildest locations also has a road snaking between its peaks (below). The road, naturally, was not seen in the series.

Securing Locations
One key to a location is finding it. Another is preparing it. Natural locations can also change, varying according to season, Espinosa observes. Near to the Rio Ancho and Palomino, on the Magdalena/La Guajira border, the location team found a swamp which was a mix of mangroves, river and salt water. “It was marvellous, with beautiful, brilliant water which gave off reflections, reaching up to people’s chest,” Espinosa remembers.

The locations team was worried, however, that the swamp was too slippery for actors, crew and animals, its bed made up of mud and roots. The second time they visited, however, water levels were far lower. “So we cleaned the swamp bed, so that footing was safe when it had more water,” he adds. Scenes of José Arcadio and friends sloshing through the swamp, completely lost, are among the most memorable of Season 1.

One of the Series’ Most Spectacular Locations is Heard But Hardly Seen
During the expedition, Úrsula gives birth to José Arcadio, terrified the baby will have a pig’s tail. Dynamo chose a special site: Tolima’s Cuevas del Mohan, – a huge 160-foot waterfall cascading down to a small cave beside a river. “The access was not easy; however, everything necessary was done to make it easy and suitable for the crew and for the baby, who was our priority on that shooting day to ensure their safety. It was necessary to adjust the roads for the access of all the trucks and all the logistics involved in this night shoot,” Toro recalls. The birth scene is shot at night. The walls of the cave can only be seen briefly behind, but the waterfall can be heard. The sense of water is always present, he adds.

Syndicado Film Sales has boarded two films selected for Berlinale: “Paul” by Denis Côté, which has its world premiere in the Panorama Dokumente section, and “Sirens Call” by Miri Ian Gossing and Lina Sieckmann, which is part of the Forum lineup.

Côté’s documentary focuses on Paul, who suffers from depression and social anxiety. He seeks safety by doing housework for dominant women, becoming the submissive “Cleaning Simp Paul.” By sharing his gently eccentric routines on social media, he combats his loneliness.

Filmed from a candid, nonjudgmental perspective, “Paul” is a portrait of an eccentric but endearing person who delivers a fresh take on our quest for well-being.

Côté’s first feature film “Les états nordiques” (2005) was awarded the Golden Leopard prize for Best Video at Locarno Film Festival. Côté’s “Vic+Flo Saw a Bear” won the Silver Bear for Innovation at Berlinale in 2013. “Hygiène sociale” won the best director award in the Encounters section at Berlinale in 2021.

In their feature-length debut, Gossing and Sieckmann dive into the merfolk subculture with performance artist and siren Una the Mermaid (Gina Rønning). The film is a hybrid of science fiction, road movie and documentary to explore a subculture that is “using fantastic imagery to talk about collective trauma, politics of the body and the urge for a lifelong transition,” according to press material.

In a statement, the directors said: “In 2017, we first learned online about a subculture of people in Portland, Oregon, who identified as mer-folk.They claimed to not only dress up as sirens in silicone tails, but to really live it as an identity in their everyday. After having met Una the Mermaid in Portland for the first time – a prison psychologist and trauma advocate in her civil life – we instantly felt a very special connection. Una and her collective were incorporating the things we had envisioned for our siren figure for a long time. A siren who had the ability to combine interdisciplinary wisdom, connecting human, nature and machine while trying to form new ways of being with each other and the world.”

The film is produced by filmfaust, in collaboration with Schalten Und Walten (Gossing and Sieckmann’s art collective), along with co-production partners Elbe Stevens Films of the Netherlands and Germany’s ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel. The producers are Claus Herzog-Reichel and Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay.
