Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Forty One.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Andre Cheret.

The wrath of heaven.

The son of Crao had not eaten anything for days. Weakened by hunger, dizzy, he saw as if in a fog, the approaching wildebeest.
Rahan must not. Not miss. The "Two-horns." If he does not kill him. That, it is he who will die.

The antelope with the curved horns reared up in shock. The ivory blade plunged into the withers, and.

Argh!
Rahan had been thrown to the ground. He caught a glimpse of the beast escaping him, the ivory weapon stuck in its flesh.

Page Two.

The foliage and the clouds mingled in a reddish mist, and it was night.
Overwhelmed by this last effort, the son of Crao had lost consciousness.

He did not hear the distant bellow of the mortally wounded wildebeest.
He did not feel the hairy-legged tarantula climbing his arm.

And linger for a moment on his torso! Conscious, he would have felt as if a torrent of fire was invading his body. But he was unconscious.

The "Shadows" are coming. Rahan will join you, Crao.
The venomous spider had disappeared, abandoning its victim to its delirium.

Rahan is a "Shadow" Among Shadows. Where are you, Crao? Why do you not welcome your son?

How long did the son of Crao lie there, overcome by hunger and fever?
Knife. The knife. Come back, "Two-horns" come back!

Page Three.

Still, he came to. In the middle of a village on stilts!
What. What. What happened to Rahan!?
We discovered you in the forest, "Fire-Hair"!

Hork-Ono the sorcerer says that you have been bitten by the spider that injects death into the blood!
For two days and two nights we have been hoping for your return to life!
Two days and two nights!?

Who, Rahan! But Work-On knows all the secrets of plants! His medicines have brought you back to the land of the living!

This clan was welcoming and its leader warmhearted.
Eat and drink, brother. You need to regain your strength!

Rahan will also have to find his cutlass that he stupidly abandoned in the body of a "Two-horns"!
But first he wants to thank your sorcerer!

The chief's face grew worried.
Hork-Ono is very old and hardly leaves his hut anymore. When he takes his secrets to the "Kingdom of Shadows." It will be an irreparable loss for the clan!
Page Four.

The sorcerer was indeed crushed by the weight of the years.
Rahan thanks you for saving him, Hork-Ono!
It was the herbs that saved you!

Now you can leave our territory!
Rahan will do it when he finds his knife, and the storm has passed.

Rahan pointed to the clouds gathering on the horizon.
Are you a wizard too?
No, but Rahan has experience of the sky.

Like you have of the plants!
Why do you not pass on the secrets of your medicines to your people, Hork-Ono!?
The son of Crao had asked the question bluntly.

The response was just as brutal.
Mine are far too stupid to assimilate these secrets!
And why should I pass on the secrets to them since I am here with them!

Because "Those-who-walk-upright" must share their knowledge! If you were to die.
Hork-Ono Will Not Die, "Fire-Hair"! The Spirits Watch Over Him! Hork-Ono Is Invulnerable!

Page Five.

Hork-Ono cannot die! And he advises you to leave as soon as possible "Fire-Hair"!
The son of Crao understood that he would not easily reason with this stubborn old man.
Hum.

Where are you going, Rahan?
The wrath of heaven will burst before the end of the day. It will be terrible. Rahan hopes he will have found his knife before!

In the clearing where he had lost consciousness two days earlier, he found traces of dry blood.
It is the blood of the "Two-horns" that Rahan has wounded. Rahan has only to follow them.

From thicket to bush and from ravine to embankment, he followed these tracks. And suddenly.
Oh! The "Long Manes" came before Rahan.

Two large, snarling lions were fighting over the wildebeest's carcass. The ivory knife was still stuck in the beast's fleshless shoulder blade.
Back, "Long-Manes"! Rahan leaves you the "Two-horns" but let him take back his knife!

Page Six.

Back "Long-Manes"! Rahan does not want the fight! He only wants his knife!
The wild beasts had no more intention of abandoning their prey.

Than the son of Crao of intending to abandon his weapon!
You wanted it "Long-Manes"!
Ra-ha-ha!

Surprised by this sudden attack from the man, the wild beasts had thrown themselves back.
Brun!

But they did so, just as Rahan dove for his ivory knife.
Ra-ha-ha!

Barely torn from the flesh of the "Gnu", the blade penetrated that of the great lion which was overpowering him.

Page Seven.

The roars and battle cries intertwined as the bodies of Rahan and the wild beasts intermingled.
Ra-ha-ha!

They were suddenly covered by the deafening crash of thunder.
Baroom!

And for a moment, it was a flood.
Ha-ha-ha! Rahan has never enjoyed the "Wrath-of-the-sky" so much!

The rain was so dense that it blurred the spears of fire that streaked the sky.
Broun.

The rain was pouring down from all positions, transforming the ravines into torrents.
Rahan has never seen such a violent "Wrath-of-the-sky"! Never! Oh!

Page Eight.

The clan, panicked, evacuated the village which the waters were about to submerge!
They do not know how to "Crawl on water"!

Men, women and children were clinging desperately to tree trunks.
Hold on, brothers! The "Anger-of-Heaven" will not last! The water will go away again!

The platform had already disappeared under the flood which was now engulfing the huts.
And Hork-Ono? Where is Hork-Ono?!

Refuses to flee his hut!
He says the spirits will come to his aid! What. What are you doing?

Hork-Ono!
In the shadow of the submerged hut, the body of the sorcerer floated between two waters!

Page Nine.

Perhaps life has not yet fled his body. Maybe it is not too late.

The flood had ceased as suddenly as it had broken out. The waters were already receding.
Ra-ha-ha!

The huts reappeared, then the platform. A moment later.
Hork-Ono has joined the "Shadow Territory" has he not?
No not yet!

For a long time, the son of Crao fought to keep death away. His hands massaged the sorcerer's torso, massaged relentlessly.
Hork-Ono will live! Live!

Fire-Hair has given life to Hork-Ono!
Ra-ha-ha!
The clan's clamor and Rahan's mingled as Hork-Ono's chest heaved of its own accord!

A moment later, the sorcerer slowly regained consciousness.
Hork-Ono knew well. That. That the "Spirits" would not abandon him!

Page Ten.

It was not the spirits that saved you, Hork-Ono, but Rahan!
So. It was because Rahan was sent to us by the "Spirits"!

It took a long time to convince the wizard that Rahan was just a simple hunter.
But the son of Crao succeeded!
If you had joined the "Kingdom of Shadows”, you would have taken with you the secret of medicinal herbs!

Now convinced that he was not invulnerable, Hork-Ono agreed to pass on his secrets.
Every morning that followed, he revealed the benefits of a plant or taught the preparation of a beverage.

Rahan engraved everything in his memory.
In a few days, Rahan learned more about the herbs and roots of the forest, than in his entire life!

On his part, the son of Crao taught this clan to "Crawl on water" and a thousand other things.
"Those-who-walk-upright" must share their knowledge! Everywhere and always!

Learning from one to teach to another! Such is the law of Rahan, the son of Crao.
Share knowledge! Spread knowledge!
Such was, in those fierce times, for "Those-who-walk-upright", the rule of survival. Rahan always respected it!
