Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Forty.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Romero.

The Wooden Eyes.

Lost in these vast expanses of snow and ice, lost and hungry, the son of Crao had once again lost track of the polar bear he was tracking.
Rahan has lost track of the "Baloua" again. Argh!
Cursed be the fire of the sun that devours his eyes.

The sun and the glare of the snow were unbearable.
The sun never sets on this territory. Oh! Rahan will soon know the fate of this unfortunate man!

The body he had glimpsed in the dazzling light was that of a dying old woman.
Where are yours, woman? Have they abandoned you?

No, No son. Our clan cannot feed useless mouths. I was the oldest and I abandoned my people of my own free will, as is our custom.

Page Two.

Let me go in peace to the "territory of shadows!" May the gods of hunting acc. Accompany you!
These were the old woman's last deaths.

The son of Crao was scanning the dazzling landscape when.
Oh! In the absence of "Balouas", one of these "fronts-of-wood" would serve Rahan!

He could barely distinguish the young caribou in the unbearable glare of the sun.
They will not give Rahan time to get around them!

Indeed, he did not have time. A dull pounding of hooves suddenly arose.
Oh. Rahan is going to be the game!

Emerging from a snow-covered thicket, a huge caribou charged him.
In other places, the son of Crao would have accepted the confrontation.
But here, blinded by the sun, he could only flee!

Page Three.

A terrible blow threw him against a wall of snow and he lost his senses.
Brang! Argh!

When he came to, the caribou had disappeared. Two shouting men were running down a slope.
Hum. These seem as dangerous as the "front-of-wood"!

The "Naked Hunter" attacked a female "Front-of-wood"! The naked hunter must die!
Fleeing from the men who were running into the blinding light, Rahan took refuge under the trees.

You wanted to kill a female! And females are sacred!
Rahan did not want to kill a female! It was the "Front-of-wood" who charged him and.

The son of Crao had just fallen among the stumps.
The youngest of the hunters was already throwing his harpoon.
Oh!

Page Four.

In an extraordinary reflex, Rahan had made a shield from a sheet of bark.
Zlang.

Death to the naked hunter!
Rahan does not fight "Those-Who-Walk-Upright"! Take back your harpoon!
As the men continued to run, unclear in the glare of the sun.

The son of Crao protected himself again with his "Shield." And a cry of stupor escaped him.
Rahan sees! Rahan sees like before!

The thin crack left in the bark by the torn harpoon filtered the light!
And he now saw his adversaries very distinctly.

Ra-ha-ha!
He could face them!
Which he did, with the agility and energy that were his!

Page Five.

One moment later.
Rahan tells you again that he didn't want to kill the female "Front-of-wood"!
Rahan is hungry, but he knows that the females must be preserved!

It is good.
We believe you! Our clan will welcome you as it always welcomes the unknown hunters!
You are too good for this one father!

A little later.
Here are our "Igloos" and here are ours!
Rahan had never seen such a village before. These huts made of ice astonished him.

Lay down on those furs, Rahan!
But we have no food to offer! Our people have not eaten for days!

In the shadow of the igloo, the son of Crao felt like he was coming back to life.
Your eyes are used to this sun, but not those of Rahan! So it never gets dark in your territory?

Ha-ha-ha!
In our country, during a long season, the night is never entirely night.

Page Six.

Can your stupid "Naked Hunter" eyes not stand our sun?
Do not make fun of Rahan, Aaki! And think about tomorrow's hunt! These little ones will not last long!

Moved, the son of Crao watched children chewing strips of skin to stave off their hunger.

Ha-ha-ha! How could a "Blind" hunter find a Baloua!? You are vain "Naked Hunter"!
Rahan never brags, Aaki! He will kill and bring back this "Baloua"!

The great day returned, with its dazzling light, unbearable for Rahan.
What are you doing, "Hair of Fire"?

Between his fingers hiding his eyes, the son of Crao could see the village and its surroundings more clearly.
And Suddenly.
Ra-ha-ha.
Rahan knows how to fight the fire of the sun!

Page Seven.

He remembered the "shield" and the harpoon incision filtering the light.
Rahan will need a similar "Shield".
A "Shield" that protects his eyes and leaves his hands free!

Have you lost your mind? What are you doing? You, "Fire-Hair"?
Rahan is making "Wooden Eyes"!
Drawing, as always, on his observations and experiences, Rahan was already at work.

And this is what you hope to kill the "Baloua" with!?
And the clan, astonished, saw him fashion a strange object of bark!
Only Aaki was ironic.

The wooden mask was taking shape, becoming more refined.
Through the thin cross-shaped slits, Rahan could see perfectly.
Ra-ha-ha!
Rahan has conquered the fire of the sun!

Rahan is now sure to track down a "Baloua"!
The son of Crao was already walking away towards the dazzling hills.
The old chief's hand rested on his son's shoulder.

Page Eight.

The "Naked Hunter" gives us a great lesson in willpower and courage, Aaki! He might need your help.
Hum.

The light, which would have been unbearable without the wooden glasses, no longer bothered Rahan.
It took him a long time to find the tracks.

Then, the polar bear itself!
You must die "Baloua"! If Rahan does not kill you, it is the little men who will die!

Aaki followed the scene from afar. The disdain he had felt towards the "Naked Hunter" disappeared.
He is tenacious and courageous!

The battle cry of the son of Crao suddenly tore through the silence.
And there was a clash!

Page Nine.

The ivory knife and claws sliced through the air. For a brief moment, man and beast were one.

Argh. You.
You won "Baloua"!
Rahan had just been thrown to the ground by a terrible claw blow.
And the "Wooden Eyes" had fluttered several paces away!

And the son of Crao no longer saw them!
For him, it was again the unbearable glare of the snow.
The brutal dazzle in which he could barely make out the white beast that was throwing itself upon him!

Blinded by the sun, he struck the nose, striking again and again.
Rahan will die, but you will die with him!
The "Narrow-Eyed Men" will find you! They will be able to eat!

Such courage forced Aaki's admiration.
The "Naked Hunter" could possibly have escaped!
He did not! He deserves to be rescued!

Page Ten.

In the glitter of tears that the sun tore from him, Rahan caught a glimpse of the bear collapsing, a long harpoon in its flank.
Zlang!

In a Halo of light, Aaki approached.
Take back your "Wooden Eyes", Rahan!
You are a brave man! I am sure that you would have killed the "Baloua" without me!

It was a party that morning for the "Narrow-Eyed Men."
But who killed the "Baloua"?
It was Aaki!
No, father, it was Rahan!

What mattered whether it was the ivory knife or the bone harpoon that struck the fatal blow!
Our clan will be able to survive until the "Season-of-the-long-day"!

Here, Rahan! Eat!
Thank you, Aaki!
Aaki's voice was friendly, his gesture brotherly.
The strange night without darkness had returned, whose glowing sun the happy son of Crao could finally bear.
