Rahan.

The Son of the Ferocious Ages!

Episode One Hundred and Thirty Nine.

By Roger Lecureux, drawn by Romero.

The Sorceress with Clear Eyes.

Since you want a fight, you will have it, "Skin of Leather"!
The tail of the great lizard struck with such violence that the raft tipped over, throwing the son of Crao into the river.

Many times in his adventurous life, Rahan had faced crocodiles. He knew their vulnerable point.

The disemboweled monster convulsed a few times and disappeared in clouds of blood.
The fight had only lasted a moment.

Page Two.

And the son of Crao easily caught up with his skiff.
He was heading towards this rocky defile which was his goal but.
Hum. Rahan will have to find another way to go there.

The "Leather-skins" are as numerous as the leaves of a tree!
The river was, indeed, infested with crocodiles!
These countless saurians prevented access to the path.

That is a pity! Rahan might have met some hunters there!
He let himself be carried away by the river which was now shaded by the canopy of the foliage.

"Those-who-walk-upright" perhaps avoid this territory for fear of the "Leather-skins"!
He had barely had this thought.

That a large and heavy net in the shape of a hawk fell upon him
Ha!

We got him! We got him!
Tangled in the mesh, he suddenly felt himself being lifted up towards the branches.

Page Three.

And.
Zlang!
Argh!
So he doesn't see the path that leads to the village!

Ha-ha-ha!
"Harghar-Heurgk" will be delighted! I am sure she'll want to make him her husband!
Ha-ha-ha!
But Gahor might be less happy!

The son of Crao came to in a vast rocky cirque surrounded by caves.
A whole clan surrounded him. The chief of which approached.
Confiscate his knife and give it to Gahor!

I did not order your capture, "Fire-Hair"! But since my people took the initiative, they will decide your fate!
Rahan decides his own fate!
Barely free of the net, Rahan rushed towards the rocks.

He did not have time to climb them! A vulture had just swooped down on him!
Back, “Hook-billed”, Back!
Ha-ha-ha!
Page Four.

Unarmed, cornered against the rock, Rahan would have to endure the attack of the Raptor who was harassing him with terrible pecks.
Ha! Argh! Ai!

But Suddenly.
Enough "Goa"! We need to be more welcoming to this hunter!

The son of Crao, stunned, saw the vulture go and land obediently on the shoulder of an old woman who was coming out of a cave.

I am the sorceress of this clan, "Fire-Hair"! My name is Harghar-heurgk!
The name was horrible to pronounce.

But those I respect have the right to call me "Hargha"!
You are strong, you are courageous. You will have this right!

This hunter is no stronger than me, Hargha! And I will prove it to you immediately!
I challenge him to a fight with clubs!

Page Five.

Rahan has no reason to fight!
Yes, you have one! If you win, you are free to go! If you lose, you will remain our prisoner!

Rahan was already given a club.
The winner will be the one who first makes the other fall! Attention. Are you ready?

The duel began, fast and rough. Each parried the blows and the clubs clashed violently.
Vlang!

See how agile this fighter is, "Goa"!
The Sorceress followed the fight, applauding Rahan's every feint.

As the club of the chief often brushed his skull, Rahan understood that he was not fighting just to fight.
But to kill!
Oh! Vrom!

The fight became fiercer.
But as he dodged a terrible blow, the son of Crao suddenly lost his balance!

Page Six.

A roar arose. Gahor rushed at his opponent, his club raised high.

But he did not have time to attack!
Rahan had just swatted him down with a full blow form his legs!

Gahor lay on the ground, moaning in pain.
Rahan wins! You must give him back his knife and let him go!
You. You are right! You can go!

No, Gahor. I know your rottenness!
You let yourself be beaten voluntarily, so that this hunter would leave us!

But I, Hargharheurgk, demand that all women in the clan have a husband, except me!
Rahan will become mine!

The son of Crao was petrified with shock as the sorceress gave an order.
Take off his necklace! We will offer him another one more worthy of the husband of Harghar-Heurgk!

Page Seven.

Your behavior is stupid, Hargha.
Less than your jealousy Gahor!
The men rushed towards Rahan, who resisted.

With uncommon energy.
What strength! What strength! See. It takes nearly ten men to master him!
Hum.

Rahan was finally knocked down. His necklace was taken away.
You fought like a "long-mane" to defend this necklace!
Is it so valuable to you?

This necklace is my most precious possession! It was bequeathed to me by Crao my father!
Each of the claws is the symbol of a virtue.

There is the claw of "Courage", that of "Loyalty", of "Generosity", of "Wisdom", of "Tenacity"! Rahan has always tried to be faithful to these virtues!

The Sorceress was stunned.
Courage, Loyalty, Generosity, Wisdom, Tenacity! What a wonderful husband you will be to me.

Page Eight.

One day, no doubt, Rahan will have a companion! But he will have chosen her himself!
The sorceress's clear eyes had suddenly hardened.

You will become my husband or you will be my slave!
So Rahan prefers to be your slave!
And he will eventually escape you, you old sorceress!

Hargharheurgk must have guessed his thoughts.
"Goa" and all the men of the clan will make sure you do not run away!

Under the bitter gaze of the chief, Rahan, affecting docility, let himself be led to the sorceress's cave.
Harghar is crazy, crazy, crazy!

As he entered the cave, the son of Crao suddenly screamed.
A “Skin-of-leather”!

A huge saurian was lurking in the shadows!
Ha-ha-ha! You have nothing to fear from him Rahan!

Page Nine.

My dear "Kraoka" died many years ago!
I mummified him to keep the memory because he was faithful to me as "Goa" is today.

And as you will be one day, Rahan!
The Sorceress went to hide the necklace of claws in a depth of the cave.

In the days that followed, Rahan played his role as a slave, ensuring the chores of wood and water, feeding the fire.

But as soon as he strayed too far from the village, a vulture would appear and signal his presence.
Rahan will get rid of you one day, "Goa"!

And he was immediately brought back to the sorceress.
Why did you try to run away again? Look what I did for you!

Rahan mocks your offerings, Hargharheurgk!
Oh! Call me "Hargha"! See this good meal I have prepared for you!

Page Ten.

Rejecting all the sorceress's kindnesses, Rahan returned to his chores.
Rahan must retrieve his knife, his necklace, and escape!
He must! He must!

Oh! Ha-ha-ha!

But that very day, as he was going to the spring, still watched by the vulture, Gahor-the-chief appeared.

It is true that I wanted to kill you the other day because I was jealous!
I have always loved Hargha! But she keeps pushing me away!

And your presence does not help matters, "Fire-hair"!
So you could help Rahan escape!

I thought about it! I'll gather the whole clan! You can take advantage of this diversion to escape!
Here. Take up your cutlass! And good luck!

Page Eleven.

The chief of the clan, soon after, gathered all the men and women, including Hargharheurgk, the Sorceress.
What do you want from us, Gahor? Why this sudden reunion?

Gahor kept his word, everything is fine for now.
The son of Crao easily found the hiding place where the sorceress had hidden his necklace.

But the vigilant "Goa", he did not participate in the assembly!
Come on "Goa" calm down.
Calm down.
Do you want meat? Will you take some?

Rahan tried to coax the vulture, but in vain!
The bird of prey Harassed him, seeking his eyes.
Rahan could kill you, "Goa"!

But he does not want to deprive Hargharheurgk of such a faithful companion as you!
Skillfully thrown, the heavy skin enveloped the raptor.

However, to gain time, Gahor gave his people an interminable speech!
And then, when the rainy season comes, we will all have to think about.

Page Twelve.

The rainy season is not coming soon, Gahor!
I am tired of listening to you talk for nothing!

Irritated, Hargharheurgk-the-sorceress returned to her cave.
All heard her howl of Rage.

When she discovered the skin trap in which her vulture was struggling!
Alert! Alert! Rahan has disappeared! Rahan has escaped!

All because of your stupid assembly, Gahor!
Well then. What are you waiting for to start hunting!
You have to bring Rahan back to me!

The son of Crao, lying in ambush, saw the hunters scattering in all directions.
The chief and the sorceress herself took part in his search.

Only the river can allow Rahan to escape!
But he will never be able to cross the shore near the "Leather Skins"!
Unless, unless.

Page thirteen.

An idea had come to him. A crazy idea, but one that could save him.
He returned to the deserted cirque, and rushed towards the sorceress’ cave.

A moment later, he was dragging the remains of the great, mutilated lizard through the undergrowth.
May Rahan never meet any hunter!

Screams were getting closer. And suddenly.
Gahor!
“Hair of Fire”!
The chief had just emerged and several of his men appeared in the distance.

What is happening on your side Gahor?
Do you see any traces of Rahan!?
Rahan's throat tightened. His fate is in Gahor's hands!

But he turned around, shouting in a powerful voice.
No! I do not see anything!
There is no trace of Rahan on this side! I will join you!

Rahan thanks you, Gahor!
I understand your idea. It is quite risky, but I hope you will succeed!

Page Fourteen.

Goodbye, brother! I wish you good luck!
Rahan also wishes you good luck.
With Hargha!
The two men exchanged a moving greeting.

And while Gahor rejoined his people, the son of Crao, dragging his strange and heavy burden, continued on his way towards the river.

He finally reached it, or rather, the wide beach where countless crocodiles were swarming.

Rahan will quickly know if his idea is good or not!
But if it is not good, he will not have time to regret it!

A moment later, under the mummified saurian's skin, he began to crawl on the shore.

This camouflage, alas, only partially concealed its member.
If the "Leather skins" notice his legs, Rahan is lost.

Page Fifteen.

His anxiety was great because the Crocodiles surrounded him on all sides. Some of them were so close to him that he could hear the sound of their scales rubbing against his shield.

Others, sometimes, dragged themselves over their "congener"!
And Rahan froze, hoping that his human scent would not betray him!

All the hunters had found themselves on a height overlooking the beach.
We find no trace of "Fire-Hair"!
He did not run away by the shore of "Leather-skins"! That is impossible!

Only Gahor was inwardly jubilant.
In any case, he escaped us! You lost your "Slave", Hargha! But if you want, you can find another one.
Me!

You are too stupid, Gahor! I will never be your wife!
Never! Never!
The eternal dispute between Gahor and Hargharheurgk resumed.

But the chief was happy. He knew that among all these "Leather-skins", one of them was taking away the one who had almost been his "Rival."

Page Sixteen.

The son of Crao had just reached the river and was shedding his camouflage.
Rahan is saved!

He swam for a moment between two waters before returning to the surface.
The echo of the altercation between the chief and the sorceress reached him.
Poor Gahor will not have an easy life!

High in the sky, a vulture circled.
It is "Goa"! He may have spotted Rahan, but too late!
No one will be able to catch Rahan anymore!

He let himself be carried away by the fast current and thought about this curious adventure he had just experienced.
Basically, Rahan escaped from the clutches of Hargharheurgk, because Gahor was jealous!

The son of Crao was right.
He had gotten out of this affair because an old chief was in love with an old sorceress.
Which shows that the feelings of "Those-Who-Walk-Upright" were not much different, in those fierce times, from what they would be hundreds of centuries later.
