A man is in custody after police responded to a domestic disturbance and shot him twice following a confrontation in Anaheim on Monday night, Sept. 16.

Two officers responded to a domestic disturbance around 8 p.m. in the 700 block of West Santa Ana Street, where they had a confrontation with the suspect, 33-year-old James Brasher, according to Sgt. Matt Sutter, a spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department.

The officers then opened fire on Brasher and struck him twice, Sutter said.

Police provided aid to Brasher at the scene, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators found that Brasher was on parole, but had a warrant out for his arrest before the situation. He was also listed as armed and dangerous, Sutter said. Police found a weapon at the scene.

Brasher was released from the hospital several hours later, taken into custody and charged with felony aggravated assault, resisting an officer by force or violence, violation of a court order and violation of parole, Sutter said.

A 34-year-old man with a history of domestic violence and violating stay-away orders and who was shot by Anaheim police in September pleaded guilty Tuesday to resisting arrest and assaulting officers and was sentenced to 270 days in jail.

James Brasher was shot during a confrontation with officers who responded to a domestic dispute at about 8 p.m. Sept. 16 in the 700 block of West Santa Ana Street, police said.

Brasher accepted a plea deal from Orange County Superior Court Judge Andre Manssourian that knocked multiple felony counts down to misdemeanors.

Brasher pleaded guilty to two counts of resisting arrest, a count of criminal threats, two counts of brandishing a BB gun and a count of violating a protective/stay-away order, all misdemeanors.

Manssourian gave Brasher credit for 144 days behind bars and placed him on one year of informal probation.

Brasher pleaded guilty in August 2022 to corporal injury on a cohabitant, brandishing a weapon and criminal threats, all misdemeanors. He was placed on three years probation and ordered to do eight hours of community service and to participate in a treatment program for batterers.

Brasher pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of violating a protective or stay-away order in October 2022, March 2023 and August 2023.

In July 2022, an ex-girlfriend applied for a protective order against Brasher alleging he beat her on July 5, 2022, in Anaheim, according to court records. The protective order was dismissed later that month when no one showed up in court for follow-up.
