Trump obviously not Obama's White Whale, so why is he the Boogeyman for almost all Dem electorate?

At the Jimmy Carter funeral, Trump and Obama were seen joking around together as though they were old chums. Obviously, Trump is not Obama's White Whale. So why is Trump the White Whale Boogeyman for so much of the partisan Democrat electorate? My theory is that making Trump to be a Boogeyman is in the interest of the Democratic Party, as it unites and strengthens the party around the common enemy Trump. But this vilifying of Trump is problematic insofar as it divides the nation as a whole. But the heads of the Democratic party are likely type A personalities with a tunnel vision focus on strengthening the party without regard to the consequences for the nation. As a result, those party heads use the Machiavellian technique of creating a problem, in the form of Trump, which results in a reaction among the partisan electorate, who clamor for a solution. The Democratic party then proffers a solution in the form of rallying around the Democratic Party. Problem, reaction, solution.
