Why ‘Be Yourself’ Can Be Misleading: When Authenticity Isn’t Enough

The advice to "be yourself" can feel comforting, but it can also lead to stagnation if it stops us from questioning or improving ourselves. If someone doesn’t feel good about who they are, telling them to "be yourself" might not help. Instead, we should encourage self-improvement and growth.

Self-improvement and emotional intelligence comes from listening to others, considering different perspectives, and being open to learning from those who are more skilled or experienced. While it can be hard to hear the truth, avoiding it means missing out on growth and motivation to change. Without this openness, we risk staying in the same place or even moving backwards emotionally and mentally.
