In April 2024, the U.S. Congress passed the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act," which required ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok to divest its U.S. operations by January 19, 2025, or face a ban. National security fears that the Chinese government could access user data or manipulate content.
