The Sabine County Sheriff’s Department has identified a weekend murder victim as 19-year-old Livye Lewis. Meanwhile, her accused killer, Matthew Hoy Edgar, 24, of Hemphill, remains in the Sabine County Jail under a 1st degree murder charge.

The investigation began shortly after 5:00 Saturday morning when emergency responders were sent to what was believed to be a two-vehicle major accident on Highway 83 East near Farm to Market Road 3121, about 3 miles east of Hemphill in an area known as Old Sabinetown.

However, emergency crews soon determined that they were not dealing with an accident, but rather a crime scene.

Sabine County Sheriff Tom Maddox said Livye Lewis died from what appeared to be blunt force trauma, and possibly a gunshot wound. Investigators are awaiting autopsy results.

Maddox said the suspect, Edgar, claimed that he had been stabbed, but once at a hospital emergency room it was determined that he had not been stabbed. He was treated for minor injuries and released to the custody of deputies.

KJAS News spoke briefly to Sheriff Maddox on Monday afternoon to ask for more information about the case. Maddox said he was on another phone call and he said that he would get back in contact with us.

According to Livye Lewis’ Facebook page, she was a certified nurses aide and she worked at the Hemphill Care Center nursing home.
