Reading of the 1535 Coverdale Bible - Day 18 of 365 (Genesis 50; Exodus 1-3) Season 3 - "A Journey of Tears and Transformation: The Birth of Liberation"
In tonight's reading, we find ourselves at the heart of the conclusion and the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of God's chosen people. The poignant farewell in Genesis echoes into the struggles and promises of Exodus.
Genesis, Chapter 50
Joseph, filled with sorrow, mourns deeply for his father, Jacob, who has passed away. With great respect and love, Joseph embraces his father’s lifeless body, weeping and kissing him farewell. In his grief, he takes charge of the burial preparations, ensuring Jacob is embalmed according to Egyptian customs. The mourning period is long and profound, with Egypt mourning for an extensive time. Joseph leads the family back to Canaan for the burial, fulfilling a promise to his father. After laying Jacob to rest, Joseph reassures his brothers, who fear retribution for their past actions against him, promising them forgiveness and protection. The chapter closes on Joseph's life in Egypt, where he thrives, blessing his family, reinforcing the bond and legacy of their lineage.
Exodus, Chapter 1
As we turn to Exodus, we see the Israelites prospering in Egypt, their numbers growing as they multiply and fill the land. However, this rise does not go unnoticed. A new Pharaoh, who knows not of Joseph’s contributions, grows fearful of the increasing strength of the Israelites. In a bid to suppress them, he subjects them to harsh labor, turning their lives into a cycle of oppression. Despite the cruelty, the Israelites continue to grow in strength, prompting the Pharaoh to take drastic measures to control their population, leading to the horrific decree that all Hebrew male infants be thrown into the Nile River.
Exodus, Chapter 2
The narrative shifts to a Levite couple who bear a son, whom they recognize as special. In an act of love and desperation, they hide him for three months to protect him from the Pharaoh’s command. When they can no longer conceal the child, his mother places him in a secure basket and sets it afloat on the Nile, hoping for his safety. The basket is discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter, who takes pity on the crying infant and adopts him, naming him Moses. Meanwhile, Moses grows up within the Egyptian palace, unaware of his Hebrew origins. As an adult, he witnesses the suffering of his people and, in a moment of fury, protects a Hebrew slave by killing an Egyptian. Fearing repercussions, Moses flees to Midian, where he begins a new life.
Exodus, Chapter 3
In Midian, Moses tends to the sheep of his father-in-law, Jethro. While journeying through the wilderness, he encounters a miraculous sight—a bush that burns yet is not consumed. Intrigued, Moses approaches, and God calls to him from the midst of the flames. He is called to lead the Israelites out of bondage and is given the assurance that he will be the vessel of God's deliverance for His people. Here begins Moses’ transformation from shepherd to leader, as he is tasked with one of the greatest missions in Biblical history.
These chapters set the stage for the incredible journey of liberation, reminding us of the cycles of life, the bonds of family, and the calls to action we all face.
