TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: Captain Cook Discovers the Hawai’ian Islands

On Sunday 18 January 1778—247 years ago today—an expedition consisting of the ships HMS Resolution and HMS Discovery under the command of Captain James Cook, discovered the Hawai’ian Islands. (Interestingly, the sailing master of the HMS Resolution was William Bligh, who would later command the HMS Bounty of the famous mutiny.) The contact with Hawai’ian natives was friendly at first, but deteriorated into an Enlightenment era “Clash of Civilizations” in which Cook ultimately lost his life. The conflict continues to echo down through history.
