We traveled to Texas to visit a good friend and couldn’t pass up the chance to explore Big Bend National Park. For this adventure, we chose to backpack the South Rim Loop in the Chisos Mountains—a stunning overnight hike that left us in awe. Along the way, we were treated to breathtaking views, encountered plenty of wildlife, and had an unforgettable up-close moment with a black bear!

Big Bend National Park is a gem in West Texas, sprawling over 800,000 acres and showcasing diverse ecosystems, from desert landscapes to mountain forests. The Chisos Mountains, located in the heart of the park, offer some of the most scenic hiking trails in Texas. Rising dramatically from the surrounding desert, this isolated mountain range is home to unique flora and fauna, including mountain lions, black bears, and rare bird species.

The South Rim Loop is considered one of the crown jewels of the park. This 12-15 mile trail (depending on your route) features dramatic cliffs that overlook the expansive Chihuahuan Desert below. It’s a challenging hike with significant elevation gain, but the views from the rim make every step worth it.

Join us as we share our journey through this incredible landscape, filled with wonder and wildlife encounters!
