Day 1 on the Tonto Trail in the Grand Canyon: We kicked off our adventure at the historic Grandview Trailhead, originally built in the 1890s to access the Last Chance Copper Mine. This steep 4.5-mile hike descends 3,600 feet, offering jaw-dropping views of the canyon’s iconic layers, from the ancient Vishnu Schist to the towering Kaibab Limestone. Every step of this challenging trail immerses you in the geological wonders of the Grand Canyon, a true masterpiece of time and erosion.

We reached the legendary Tonto Trail, a remote and less-traveled route that follows the Tonto Platform, offering sweeping views of the Inner Gorge and the mighty Colorado River. After a tough but rewarding day, we set up camp at Cottonwood, replenished our water, and took a moment to reflect on the canyon’s vast, timeless beauty.

Being back in the Grand Canyon, affectionately known as the “Big Ditch,” felt like coming home to one of the most awe-inspiring places on Earth. This trail is a must for seasoned hikers seeking solitude, breathtaking landscapes, and a deeper connection to this natural wonder.

If you’re planning your own Grand Canyon backpacking trip, consider the Tonto Trail for its unique views, rich history, and unforgettable challenges.
