where exactly? Hamburg, City Hall, in the Great Festival Hall, at 720 square meters the largest hall in the Hamburg City Hall.
The Hamburg City Hall is the seat of the Hamburg Parliament and the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The architecturally magnificent building on the Kleiner Alster was built between 1886 and 1897 in the historicist style of the North German Neo-Renaissance. The tower is 112 meters high and, alongside the towers of Hamburg's main churches, is an important landmark in the Hamburg cityscape.
On the town hall market side, between the window niches, there are twenty kings and emperors of the old German Empire, from Charlemagne to Francis II, each weighing 600 kg in bronze. Above the monarchs, on the central tower, are depictions of the civic virtues: bravery, piety, unity and wisdom. The fact that the civic virtues are arranged above the emperors symbolizes the freedom of the city of Hamburg from the crown, as Hamburg was not an imperial city, but a Hanseatic city. Above the main entrance there is also a mosaic depicting the Hamburg state allegory Hammonia.
