Jack the Baboon is a fascinating figure in South African history, known for his incredible role as an unofficial railway signalman. His story began in the late 19th century when James Wide, a railway signalman working for the Cape Government Railways, lost both his legs in a tragic accident. Determined to continue his work despite his disability, Wide, nicknamed "Jumper" for his habit of jumping between train cars, began using crutches to move around. However, he soon realized he needed additional help to manage his duties effectively.

One day, while visiting a local market, Wide encountered Jack, a chacma baboon, and was impressed by the animal's intelligence. He purchased Jack and began training him to assist with his daily tasks. Jack quickly proved to be an exceptional helper. Under Wide's guidance, he learned to push Wide's wheelchair, help with household chores, and even manage railway signals. Using a series of hand gestures and verbal commands from Wide, Jack operated the levers that controlled the track signals, ensuring trains were directed correctly and safely......
