First things first - this isn't just another theme park ride. The Backlot Tour gives you a genuine peek into working movie and TV sets. During our most recent visit, we actually saw crews filming a new network show! Of course, no spoilers, but that's the magic of this experience - every tour is unique because you never know what you might catch in action.
The tour kicks off in the lower lot, where you'll board one of Universal's signature trams. Pro tip: try to sit in the middle sections of the tram. The front can be a bit loud near the guide's speaker, while the back can make it harder to hear commentary during the quieter portions. Our guide, Sarah, was absolutely fantastic - dropping fascinating trivia about Universal's 100+ year history throughout the journey.
Speaking of history, you'll cruise past some of Hollywood's most famous sets. The highlight has to be Courthouse Square - instantly recognizable from "Back to the Future." It's mind-blowing to see how this single location has been transformed for countless productions over the decades. The New York Street and European sets are equally impressive, showcasing how movie magic can turn a single backlot into practically any location on Earth.
Now, let's talk about the effects demonstrations. The flash flood is an absolute classic, showing how filmmakers create natural disasters on demand. The King Kong 360 3D experience, designed by Peter Jackson, is incredibly immersive - you genuinely feel like you're caught in a battle between Kong and a pack of V-rexes. And yes, "Jaws" still manages to get screams from every tram, even from guests who know exactly what's coming!
The earthquake simulation in the subway station remains a personal favorite. The practical effects here are outstanding - watching thousands of gallons of water rush toward your tram while the ceiling crumbles never gets old. It's a masterclass in how practical and digital effects can work together seamlessly.
Fair warning - the tour runs about 60 minutes, and there's no bathroom break. Make sure to handle that beforehand! Also, while most of the tour is covered, you'll still be exposed to the elements at times, so dress accordingly and maybe bring sunglasses.
Price-wise, the tour is included with your Universal Studios admission, making it an absolute must-do. My recommendation? Do it early in the day. The backlot gets busy with actual production as the day goes on, which can lead to certain areas being closed off.
One final tip - keep your phone ready but respect the rules about flash photography. There are plenty of great photo ops, but remember this is a working studio, and some areas have strict no-photo policies.
Is the Universal Studios Backlot Tour worth your time? Absolutely! It's a unique blend of theme park attraction and genuine Hollywood history that you simply can't experience anywhere else. Give this video a thumbs up if you've been on the tour, and share your favorite moments in the comments below!
