Trial in Wuppertal
After vaccine damage - 19-year-old sues BioNTech
January 15, 2025 at 11:34 a.m.
After being vaccinated against the corona virus, around 2,300 people in North Rhine-Westphalia have applied for recognition of vaccine damage. 133 were recognized - including the application of a young woman from Solingen. Since Friday (January 10), she has been suing the vaccine manufacturer BioNTech.

Trial begins in Wuppertal
19-year-old Selin Islami is suing the vaccine manufacturer BioNTech. Since her vaccination against the corona virus in 2021, the young woman has suffered from an extremely rare autoimmune disease. "My life has really changed completely. I've had over 20 operations, from almost bleeding to death to not being able to breathe properly, not being able to swallow. I was fed artificially for a long time because I could no longer eat on my own. At some point, this, let's say, terrible everyday life will simply become normal everyday life because it is simply part of me now," says the young woman.

Autoimmune disease is a consequence of the vaccination
Selin has the autoimmune disease "myasthenia gravis". In this case, misdirected antibodies disrupt the communication between nerves and muscles. This causes the muscles in various parts of the body to become tired. The result: the former competitive gymnast can often only manage a few steps. She spends most of her time in a wheelchair and is a nursing case.

500,000 euro lawsuit
As a result of the recognition of her vaccine damage, the 19-year-old will receive, among other things, 934 euros a month. A pension from the "State of North Rhine-Westphalia". Since Selin will not be able to work in the foreseeable future, this is not enough for her. "The plaintiff is suing the defendant as the manufacturer of the vaccine for payment of compensation for pain and suffering in the amount of at least half a million euros," says Helena Salamon-Limberg from the Wuppertal Regional Court.

BioNTech doubts connection
According to BioNTech's lawyers, there are indications that the autoimmune disease was triggered by an infection and not by the vaccination - so there is no causality to the corona vaccine: "Selin has been 100% recognized as a vaccine injury by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. And against this background, these questions that many others are asking about causality do not arise for us," says Tobias Ulbrich, Selin Islami's lawyer. The vaccine manufacturer's lawyers do not want to speak on camera today. In court, they emphasize their sympathy. A lawyer says she can understand how Selin's mother is feeling. For Aylin Dalgül, this is absurd: "To say that to a mother who almost lost her child several times. I personally took my daughter to the intensive care unit several times. And the disease is breathing down our necks every day. And I don't think that the opposing lawyer can understand in the slightest how we feel."

There is not much left of Selin's old life - probably because of an injection that was supposed to protect her. The court will decide whether the 19-year-old will receive compensation for this at the end of February at the earliest.
