250th Anniversary Tribute to Daniel D Tompkins Part 1

This episode of TMR (The Morningstar Report) features New York City resident and citizen historian, Jill Benzer, who gives a tribute to Daniel D. Tompkins after whom the famous East Village Park is named.
June 21st, 2024, was the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel D. Tompkins.

The year 2024 was also the 190th anniversary of Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan, and the 120th anniversary of the Tompkins Square Library, adjacent to the park.

Who Was Daniel D. Tompkins?

Daniel D. Tompkins was twice Governor of New York State during the War of 1812 and twice Vice President of the United States under James Monroe from March 4, 1817 – March 4, 1825.

Daniel D. Tompkins was largely responsible for ending slavery in New York State through his great efforts to pass the Abolition Act, which ended slavery in New York in 1827.
