No, you’re not seeing double. That’s two Robert De Niros in the trailer for Barry Levinson’s upcoming gangster movie, The Alto Knights. De Niro stars as two mob bosses, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, the real-life leaders of New York’s Genovese crime family. Levinson’s first theatrically released film since 2015’s Rock The Casbah, the film explores the lifelong friendship and violent dissolution of their relationship after one is nearly killed in an assassination attempt and considers bringing down the mob while in retirement. Now armed with a new trailer, The Alto Knights are planning another special effects-driven De Niro vehicle, challenging The Irishman’s de-aged De Niro with a pair of Bobbys that are collectively 162 years old.

Here’s the synopsis:

“The film follows two of New York’s most notorious organized crime bosses, Frank Costello (De Niro) and Vito Genovese (De Niro), as they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever.”

Written by Goodfellas scribe Nicholas Pileggi, Alto Knights also stars Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, and Katherine Narducci—all of whom are only cast as one character. Can De Niro play two mob bosses as effectively as he plays one? We’ll find out when the film opens on March 21.
Warner Bros has unveiled the first trailer for The Alto Knights (fka Wise Guys), its Barry Levinson mob drama starring Robert De Niro in dual roles.

Scripted by Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas), The Alto Knights tells the story of Vito Genovese (De Niro) and Frank Costello (De Niro), a pair of Italian Americans running two separate crime families during the mid-20th century. Genovese tried and failed to assassinate Costello in 1957, with the latter taking his leave from the mob after being injured during the attempt on his life.

The project reunites De Niro with Levinson following collaborations on the Emmy-nominated HBO TV movie The Wizard of Lies, which had De Niro playing Bernie Madoff, and Magnolia Pictures’ 2008 dramedy, What Just Happened, as well as the famed director’s earlier films Wag the Dog and Sleepers. It’s had a long road to screens, stuck in development hell for a number of decades, before Warner Bros. Pictures revived the project in the summer of 2022.

Robert De Niro is a two-hit wonder in the trailer for the upcoming gangster film “The Alto Knights” from Barry Levinson. De Niro stars in a double role as both mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, real-life kingpins of New York’s Genovese crime family.

Alongside De Niro stars Debra Messing as Costello’s wife Bobbie, Kathrine Narducci as Genovese’s wife Anna and Cosmo Jarvis. “The Alto Knights” is set to follow the story of the Italian American mafiosi in the mid-twentieth century and Genovese’s attempted hit on Costello in 1957.

De Niro is no stranger to the crime thriller, especially ones with mob ties. One of his first was Martin Scorsese’s 1973 feature “Mean Streets” where he starred alongside Harvey Keitel. De Niro then joined Francis Ford Coppola for the 1974 “The Godfather Part II” and then Scorsese again for his 1990 mob feature “Goodfellas.” De Niro has also starred in “Casino,” “A Bronx Tale,” “Heat” and numerous other crime dramas.

In March 2023, Levinson described the “The Alto Knights” story as one of “best friends who become mortal enemies.” Of De Niro’s double-role, Levinson said, “It’s amazing. He’s such an astounding actor. It was literally like two different people, like I was working with two different actors.”

Production
The film, initially titled Wise Guys, was in the works from as early as the 1970s but over the decades was passed on by every major studio.[6] Warner Bros. Pictures began work on the film in May 2022 and gave it the greenlight that August. Nicholas Pileggi wrote the script and Barry Levinson directed the film starring Robert De Niro in a double role.[7] In October 2022, Debra Messing and Kathrine Narducci joined the cast.[8][9] In January 2023, Cosmo Jarvis joined the cast.[3]

The production used vehicle vinyl wraps on 1950s-era cars and trucks to make the vehicles look new in the film.[10] Filming took place in December 2022 in Ohio. The production shut down part of US 35 in Greene County,[11] as well as SR 123 in the greater Cincinnati area before moving to the suburbs of Cincinnati.[12] In October 2023, the film was re-titled Alto Knights; a trailer released in January 2025 revealed the final title to be The Alto Knights.[13][1]

Release
The film is currently scheduled to be released on March 21, 2025.[14] It was originally scheduled to be released on February 2, 2024, taking over the original release date of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's Toto, and then on November 15, 2024.[15][13] On October 24, 2023, Variety reported that, because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, Warner Bros. was considering delaying the film's release to 2025 along with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.[16]

Harrison Cosmo Krikoryan Jarvis (born 1 September 1989) is a British actor and singer-songwriter. He has starred in the films Lady Macbeth (2016), Calm with Horses (2019), and Persuasion (2022). In 2024, he portrayed John Blackthorne in the historical drama series Shōgun.

Early life
Jarvis was born in New Jersey, U.S. to an Armenian-American mother and British father.[1] He moved to England with his parents at the age of three months. As a child, he moved to Totnes, Devon with his mother and younger brother.[2] About his nationality, Jarvis has said: "I came here [England] when I was a baby. I've never lived [in America] ... I don't feel a connection to anywhere."[3] Jarvis is married.[4]

Career
2010–2013: Early music career and The Naughty Room

Jarvis in 2013
Jarvis confirmed his second album's title as Is the World Strange or Am I Strange? on his official Facebook page. The first single released from the album was "Gay Pirates", which was released on 23 January 2011. The single's music video was directed by Jarvis. The song was featured as Record of the Day[5] and AOL's Spinner video of the day.[6][failed verification] "Gay Pirates" was voted number 85 on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2011, which aired on Australia Day in 2012. The album itself was given an 8.5/10 rating from Soundblab album reviews.[7] He announced in an interview with TNC that he had begun work on his first feature film, called The Naughty Room.[8]

The film premiered on BBC Four on 20 August 2012, shortly after the release of Jarvis' third studio album, titled Think Bigger, the film includes multiple songs/variations of songs from the album in the soundtrack.[9] He toured the UK in late 2012 supporting Mad Dog Mcrea, for whom he penned the song "Waiting on the Hill". The comedy film Hawk(e): The Movie (2013) features several songs by Jarvis.[10] In January 2013, "Love This" came in at number 59 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2012.[11] On 20 November 2020, Jarvis re-released his 2012 album Think Bigger as Think Bigger - (2020 Deluxe Edition), as the 2012 album was never fully released globally. The Think Bigger reissue contains all of its 11 original recordings remastered for 2020, plus a further nine bonus tracks from that same writing period, including five never before heard songs and four acoustic live 'bedroom' versions of key Think Bigger tracks.[12]

2015–2023: Breakthrough
In 2015, Jarvis auditioned and was cast to portray the character of Sebastian in William Oldroyd's debut feature film Lady Macbeth.[13] Jarvis has starred in two stage plays directed by Richard Jones, the 2017 production of The Hairy Ape by Eugene O'Neill at Park Avenue Armory in New York and The Twilight Zone at the Almeida Theatre in London.[14]

In 2019, his portrayal of Arm in the independent film Calm with Horses earned him a nomination as Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards 2020 and London Film Critics' Circle. Adapted from the short story of the same name from the collection Young Skins by Colin Barrett, Calm with Horses was received positively, with critics praising both Nick Rowland's work as a debut director and Jarvis' performance as Douglas Armstrong.[15] The film was released in the United States under the title The Shadow of Violence.[16] In 2020, Jarvis was a guest star on the fifth season of Peaky Blinders, as the character Barney.[17] Following Peaky Blinders, Jarvis appeared in Nocturnal, Funny Face, The Evening Hour and Raised by Wolves.[18]

In 2021, Jarvis was announced to star opposite Dakota Johnson in Netflix's adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion.[19] He was also cast as John Blackthorne, a leading role opposite Hiroyuki Sanada in FX's 2024 limited-series Shōgun, the second TV adaptation of James Clavell's best-selling novel of the same name.[20][21] In 2022, Jarvis was nominated for Best Lead Performance in the British Independent Film Awards' new gender-neutral category for his performance in It Is In Us All. He was also nominated for Best International Actor at the Irish Film and Television Awards.[22] [23]

2024: Shōgun and upcoming projects
FX's Shōgun premiered in February 2024, receiving critical acclaim worldwide.[24] Jarvis' performance as John Blackthorne was described as a "force to be reckoned with" by IGN[25] and The Washington Post wrote that he "brilliantly channels" his role as the marooned English pilot in the historical drama.[26] Empire described Jarvis as "compelling" and "magnetic". In his review, Nick Clark wrote for the Evening Standard, "Jarvis is one of those actors who is not just chameleonic – anyone who has seen him in Calm with Horses and then Persuasion can attest to his powers of transformation – but always brings so much more to a role than just speaking the words in order. It's the eyes; there's a whole lot going on behind them, and it means he's never less than compelling."[27]

Jarvis' upcoming projects are Australian prison drama Inside,[28] The Alto Knights, starring alongside Robert De Niro and directed by Barry Levinson,[29][30][31][32] and Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland's Warfare.[33]
