The Colors Within (Japanese: きみの色, Hepburn: Kimi no Iro, lit. 'Your Color') is a 2024 Japanese animated film. Directed by Naoko Yamada and produced by Science Saru, it was released in Japanese theaters in August 2024.
Premise
High school student Totsuko has the ability to see people as colors, and is particularly fascinated with the color she sees in her classmate, Kimi. After following Kimi to a used bookstore, Totsuko accidentally implies she can play piano, leading to her joining a band with Kimi, who can play guitar, and Rui, a boy who collects musical equipment and plays the theremin. The trio's friendships develop as they write music and confront issues in their home lives.

Production
In November 2022, Naoko Yamada stated in an interview with Anime News Network that she was working on a film with Science Saru.[4] The title was announced in December; it was also announced that Reiko Yoshida would be writing the screenplay and that Kensuke Ushio would be composing the music.[5]
Release
The film was originally set to be released in Japanese theaters in Q4 2023.[5] In August 2023, Toho announced that the film would be delayed until 2024.[6] The film premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2024.[7] The film was released in Japanese theaters on August 30, 2024.[1]
Internationally, Encore Films released the film in India on November 22, 2024.[8] GKIDS is set to release the film on January 24, 2025, in North American theaters with an English dub.[9][10] The film is set to be released in the United Kingdom by Anime Limited on January 31, 2025.[9][11]
Manga adaptation
A manga adaptation, written and illustrated by Sanami Suzuki, began serialization on Kadokawa Shoten's Comic Newtype website on July 16, 2024.[12]
Reception
The film won the Golden Goblet Award for Best Animation Film at the 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival.[13] It tied with Memoir of a Snail for the Audience Award at the 7th Animation Is Film Festival.[14]

GKIDS has finally unveiled The Colors Within trailer for the upcoming U.S. release of the coming-of-age music anime movie about three students who find friendship after forming a band together.

When is The Colors Within release date?
The Colors Within (Kimi no iro) is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters starting on December 13 in Los Angeles, followed by its nationwide release on January 13, 2025. This comes after the anime film had its world premiere at the recent Annecy International Film Festival.
The film is directed by Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice) from a screenplay written by Reiko Yoshida (Violet Evergarden), with kensuke ushio (Chainsaw Man) composing the score. The creative team includes animation director and character designer Takashi Kojima. It is a production by Science SARU (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) and Story inc. (Your Name, Weathering With You, Suzume). It is produced by Genki Kawamura (Your Name).
The English-subbed version of the first trailer for anime film The Colors Within (Kimi no Iro) was released on the GKIDS YouTube Channel last Friday.
Animated by Science SARU (DAN DA DAN, Star Wars: Visions, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off) and directed by Naoko Yamada (K-ON!, A Silent Voice), the film follows a high school girl named Totsuko who can see the “colors” of the emotions i people’s hearts. In order to keep her friends and family from feeling dark feelings, she worries, reads situations, and even lies to smooth things over.
Her life takes a turn when she meets a beautiful woman with an incredibly beautiful color and a music-loving boy at an antique bookshop in the corner of town. The story follows these three sensitive people who gather together to play in a band.
The script is written by Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Girls und Panzer, Ride Your Wave, Violet Evergarden). The music is composed by Kensuke Ushio (Space Dandy, A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird, Chainsaw Man). Mr. Children performs the film’s theme song, “in the pocket.”
The Colors Within premiered in Japan on Friday, and is slated for an international release in Winter 2024. The film won the Best Animation Film award at the 26th Shanghai INternational Film Festival in June.

GKIDS and Anime Limited have recently revealed a joint acquisition of the latest anime film “The Colors Within“, across multiple territories. The film will have its World Premiere in competition at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
GKIDS will screen the film across North America, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand with both English subbed and dubbed versions next winter. Anime Limited will handle screenings in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and all of Europe.
PLAION PICTURES will manage distribution in Italian and German-speaking territories. However, screenings will not be available in Asia, the Middle East, and Northern Africa.
