BYD was founded by Wang Chuanfu in February 1995 as a battery manufacturing company in  Shenzhen, China. BYD's largest subsidiary, BYD Auto, was founded in 2003 and has grown to become the world's largest manufacturer of plug-in electric vehicles. Since 2009, BYD's automotive business has contributed over 50% of its revenue. By 2023, it contributed over 80% of the company's total revenue. The company also produces rechargeable handset batteries, electric vehicle batteries and bulk storage, forklifts, solar panels, semiconductors, and rail transit network.Through its subsidiary FinDreams Battery, BYD was the second largest electric vehicle battery producer globally in 2023 after CATL, by producing 15.8% of the world's output.

BYD made its automotive debut in 2003 by introducing the BYD F3, a compact saloon that swiftly gained popularity in the Chinese market. The F3's affordability and fuel efficiency were early indicators of BYD's commitment to innovation and accessibility.

2008, BYD made headlines by launching the F3DM, China's first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle. This groundbreaking achievement began BYD's transition towards electric mobility, a shift defining its future.

The e6, unveiled in 2010, was designed with ride-hailing services in mind. Its spacious interior and electric powertrain made it a preferred choice for taxi operators in China and abroad. This move demonstrated BYD's adaptability and readiness to address urban transportation challenges.

As the electric vehicle market continued to evolve, BYD introduced the Tang in 2015, a midsize SUV boasting a powerful plug-in hybrid system. The Tang combined performance with eco-friendliness, showcasing BYD's commitment to blending cutting-edge technology with style.

The Qin launched in 2013, paid homage to China's historical Qin Dynasty and symbolized a new era in electrified transportation. This compact sedan featured a hybrid powertrain, demonstrating BYD's commitment to making green technology accessible to a broad audience.

BYD unveiled the Han in 2020, positioning it as a flagship electric sedan for the global market. The Han offered an impressive range, cutting-edge technology, and a sleek design, solidifying BYD's presence in the international EV scene.

In 2020, BYD introduced the Blade Battery, a revolutionary lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery technology. The Blade Battery's enhanced safety and energy density made it a game-changer in the electric vehicle industry, setting new standards for EV safety and performance.
