Shame On the Moon (Bob Seger, 1982). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2025-01-13. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Shame On the Moon," written by Rodney Crowell, was Bob Seger's 10th top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart rising to no. 2 in 1982 and remained on the chart for 21 weeks; it was also his highest charting single until his 1987 release "Shakedown," which reached the no. 1 position on the chart (Whitburn, 2013). The song also hit no. 1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and his only entry on the Country chart, where it went to no. 15 (songfacts, 2025). Don Henley of the Eagles turned Seger onto Rodney Crowell's 1981 self titled album that contained Crowell's recording of the song (songfacts, 2025). According to Seger, the song is "more like a western song - a cowboy song - than it is a country & western song. . . . We cut it in like two hours, and everyone decided it was the miracle track. . . . The next thing we know, the Capitol guys are saying, 'That's the single!' (laughs) Fine! Whatever it takes! So thank you, Rodney. It's a great song, and I'm beholden to the lad for writing it" (B. Holdship, Creem, May, 1983, pp. 28-35).

Lyrics:

Until you've been beside a man
You don't know what he wants
You don't know if he cries at night
You don't know if he don't

When nothin' comes easy
Old nightmares are real
Until you've been beside a man
You don't know how he feels

Once inside a woman's heart
A man must keep his head
Heaven opens up the door
Where angels fear to tread

Some men go crazy
Some men go slow
Some men go just where they want
Some men never go

Oh, blame it on midnight
Ooh, shame on the moon

Everywhere it's all around
Comfort in a crowd
Strangers faces all around
Laughin' right out loud

Hey watch where you're goin'
Step light on old toes
'Cause until you've been beside a man
You don't know who he knows

Oh, blame it on midnight
Ooh, shame on the moon
Oh, blame it on midnight
Ooh, shame on the moon

Ooh, ooh, ooh
Blame it on midnight
You can blame it on midnight
Shame, shame, shame, shame on the moon
You can blame it on midnight
Shame on the moon

Blame it on the moon
