We consider the prophecies of the destruction of Babylon today from Jeremiah chapters 50 and 51. We also talk briefly about Isaiah 13 and 14 and Revelation chapters 17 and 18.
The destruction of Babylon prophesied in Jeremiah speaks of such destruction that it becomes uninhabited and is utterly desolate.
That level of destruction did not happen when Babylon was defeated by the Medes and Persians, so it is another example of an Old Testament prophecy that has a near term relevance and fulfillment and also a far term greater fulfillment. In this case, the far term fulfillment will come at the end of Daniel's 70th Week, or the seven year Tribulation Period.
This passage also tells of Israel's restoration and a time when God will place the New Covenant in the hearts and minds of HIs people, Israel.
