My name is Sam Houston, and I have lived a life full of challenges, triumphs, and unforgettable moments that shaped not just me, but the history of this great country. I was born on March 2, 1793, in Rockbridge County, Virginia. When I was just a boy, my family moved to Tennessee, and it was there, among the Cherokee people, that I truly found myself. They took me in as one of their own, taught me their language, and called me "Colonneh," which means "The Raven." This connection to the Cherokee shaped my identity and values, and it stayed with me for the rest of my life.

As a young man, I joined the U.S. Army and fought in the War of 1812 under General Andrew Jackson. At the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, I was badly wounded—twice—but I refused to leave the battlefield. My bravery caught General Jackson's attention, and he became my mentor, setting me on a path toward leadership and public service. After my military service, I entered politics in Tennessee, serving as a congressman and eventually as governor. But my life hasn’t always been easy. A failed marriage and personal struggles led me to leave Tennessee and return to the Cherokee Nation, where I lived for a time and found peace.
