Firefighters are scrambling to make further progress against wildfires that have killed 16 people in the Los Angeles area as forecasters again warn of dangerous weather with the return of strong winds.

At least 16 people are missing, and authorities say that number is expected to rise.

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office says five of the deaths were attributed to the Palisades Fire and 11 resulted from the Eaton Fire.

The California Office of Emergency Services says 150,000 people in Los Angeles County are under evacuation orders, with more than 700 people taking refuge in nine shelters.

In an interview that aired Sunday on NBC News, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the fires could end up being the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.
