Indiana Jones' leap of faith

This clip from "Indiana Jones III: The last crusade" depicts a situation many people may recognize from their own lives. The episode is symbolically authentic in the way it demonstrates how a spiritually significant choice unavoidably has to be made without guarantees. Why?

Because otherwise it would not have the quality that (in real life) creates the bridge enabling one to cross into the true realm of the holy. You cannot go there at all if you have not attained a measure of holiness yourself.

What does holiness mean in this context? It means making a choice out of disinterested love, and from faith in the reality of good (of God). The scene demonstrates this by showing how Indy does not have the courage to step into the abyss until the moment when he becomes more focused upon his seriously wounded father's pain than the danger to his own life. He knows that his father's only hope of healing is beyond that abyss. Then, his compassion carries him across.
