Edgar Maddison Welch, known for his 2016 “Pizzagate” incident where he fired a gun inside a Washington D.C. restaurant based on a false conspiracy theory, was shot and killed by North Carolina police during a traffic stop.

Welch, a passenger in a vehicle stopped in Kannapolis, was recognized by an officer who knew he had an outstanding felony probation violation warrant.

When officers attempted to arrest him, Welch drew a handgun, prompting them to shoot.

He died two days later in the hospital.

Welch had previously pleaded guilty to charges related to the 2016 incident, where he fired a rifle at a locked closet in Comet Ping Pong restaurant, believing the conspiracy theory, the Associated Press has reported.
