THE FREAK – (For Concert Band)

The FREAK was written for my band students with the purpose of providing them with a “fun” song to play. I chose the title because some of my students were being made fun of by other students at school, simply because it was not “cool” to play a musical instrument. The title has provided me with the opportunity to share with them that usually when another individual makes fun of someone, it is because they are jealous, and not willing to put forth the effort that it takes to learn to play an instrument. I often remind “my freaks” how special they are to me, and how very proud I am of them.

It is my hope that The FREAK will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play and provide other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used to motivate and encourage their students.

The FREAK is dedicated to the past and present members of the Madison County Central School Bands.
