Aired 12/22/24. Merry Christmas everyone! What a WONDERFUL time of year! Let’s dive right in!

As we said yesterday in our Reading of Matthew’s account, we don’t know for certain what day Jesus was born on, and of course much has been written about the pagan influence on selecting Dec 25th.

However, there is some indication in the Gospel description of the months that Jesus was possibly born during the 7th month Holy days, perhaps Yom Kippur or Feast of Trumpets, which would have Spiritual significance, but who knows?

Remember, Jesus not only KEPT the Law, but EMBODIED the law. He was that sacrificial Lamb Slain for all our sins on Passover Day to ultimately fulfill this Jewish Observance on behalf of the whole world.

And so, people may dispute about the ACTUAL birth day of Jesus, and whether we should boycott this apparently PEGAN affiliated holiday, I believe that in spite of these discrepancies, God had USED out RICH Christmas Traditions to tell the gospel of His love every year around the world.

And that makes it a very VALUABLE opportunity to bring Glory to His Kingdom and the Amazing gift of God’s Son.
So let’s just read through that wonderful Account of Jesus’s Birth, which we celebrate as Christmas.

Yesterday we looked at the account of Jesus’s Birth according to Matthew, who was writing for a Jewish Audience. And he cited several Old Testament verses to show how Jesus FULFILLED the Prophecies about the coming Messiah.

But now we are looking at Luke’s account, who was writing to a Gentile audience, and He has other goals in mind considering the background and cultural values of that audience.

For example, Luke is called a great Historian in both theological and secular academic circles. This is because he was aware that his intelligent, but gentile audience would want every detail to help establish the veracity of events that NONE of them had witnessed.

In Matthew’s case, he is writing to Jews who often had HEARD about the astonishing events in Judea and Galilee, and many people who had WITNESSED some of the events—particularly those surrounding the crucifixion.

And so Luke systematically details the events by including corroborating details from related events more historically familiar.
But he also details SUPERNATURAL events and personal details that are left out of Matthew’s account, such as the story of Zechariah and the song’s that Mary, Elizabeth, and Zechariah sing.

It is likely that Luke is able to write these events in such detail because he had access to WITNESSES that could give him the inside scoop. We see this opportunity in the Book of Acts, when Paul is thrown into prison in Caesarea for about 2 years, and Luke, who also wrote the book of Acts stayed in town with him. This likely gave Luke the access to witnesses both in Caesarea and up the hill a bit in Jerusalem, where the church had been established, including Jesus’s Mother Mary, and His brothers and sisters, who may have also been told these details.

So let’s begin our look at the Christmas Account through the meticulous pen of Luke:
