Let’s unbox the Downwind Ulu. It comes in a large Gerber box strapped to this piece of cardboard. After liberating it the first thing that greets us is a pretty cool Tan Canvas carry holster which is absolutely amazing taken the fact that I bought this knife for 30 dollars. This low-profile sheath comes with a built in beltloop, it has riveted double stitching, plus it seals with both velcro and a pair of press studs.

My version of the Gerber Ulu features Sage G10 handle scales which combos extremely well with the brown fabric and probably the most interesting thing about this grip is that the G10 hugs the knives tang in a full circle. I really enjoy the philosophy of this pistol grip because it makes the Ulu extremely versatile. This knife is great for hunting or food prep and probably the only thing I don’t like about it is the blade steel.

The Ulu design has a pretty cool backstory by the way, as it is the traditional knife of the natives in Alaska who invented this blade shape way before the age of steel. Since the first versions of this knife were made of bones or even some volcanic rocks, like obsidian.
