Psalm 2: Kiss the Son Blues
** Psalm 2 is a profound declaration of God's sovereignty and His anointed King. Traditionally attributed to King David, this psalm reflects the tension between earthly powers and divine authority. David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, likely penned this psalm during a time of political unrest, rebellion, or coronation—moments when the nations challenged God's chosen leadership. It serves as both a warning to those who oppose God and a reassurance to those who trust in His power. Beyond its immediate context, Psalm 2 carries a prophetic message pointing to Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of the Messiah, the anointed Son of God, who reigns over all creation.
** Original Text (WEB)
1 Why do the nations rage,
and the peoples plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth take a stand,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let’s break their bonds apart,
and cast their cords from us.”
4 He who sits in the heavens will laugh.
The Lord will have them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his anger,
and terrify them in his wrath, saying,
6 “Yet I have set my King on my holy hill of Zion.”
7 I will tell of the decree:
Yahweh said to me, “You are my son.
Today I have become your father.
8 Ask of me, and I will give the nations for your inheritance,
the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron.
You shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
10 Now therefore be wise, you kings.
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve Yahweh with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Give sincere homage to the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish on the way,
for his wrath may soon be kindled.
Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.
** Lyrics: "Kiss the Son Blues"
(Verse 1)
Why do the nations rage,
Why do kings take a stand?
Plotting their vain rebellion,
Against the work of His hand.
They say, “Break these bonds apart,
Throw off these cords so tight,”
But the One who reigns in heaven,
He laughs at their foolish fight.
(Chorus)
Serve the Lord with trembling,
Rejoice and fear His name.
Kiss the Son, oh don’t delay,
Or you’ll perish in the flame.
Blessed are those who find refuge,
In His love, they’ll never be the same.
(Verse 2)
He speaks from Zion’s hill,
“My King is set in place.
You are my Son, this very day,
I’ve given you the nations’ space.”
“Ask of me, they’ll be yours,
To the earth’s ends, every land.
With a rod of iron, you’ll break their schemes,
Like a potter smashes sand.”
(Chorus)
Serve the Lord with trembling,
Rejoice and fear His name.
Kiss the Son, oh don’t delay,
Or you’ll perish in the flame.
Blessed are those who find refuge,
In His love, they’ll never be the same.
(Bridge)
Be wise, you mighty rulers,
Take heed, you judges of earth.
The Lord’s wrath burns like fire,
But His mercy brings rebirth.
(Outro)
Why do the nations rage?
Why do kings take a stand?
But I’ll trust in Yahweh’s promise,
And rest in His mighty hand.
