Winter Freeze Up - Ep. 27 January 12, 2025

Final video! We've achieved our goal of 10 inch ice thickness. And, to verify that finding, the local snowmobile club volunteers were out staking the lake this afternoon! There's certainly not enough snow for them to open the trail past the lake but, it's a start.
I hope you've enjoyed this series. I had expectations of an early freeze up with that initial freeze over right at the beginning of December. But, the water temperature were probaly too warm fo the ice to grow despite some pretty cold nights. Then the warm rains actually made the ice shrink 3/4 of an inch. But steady cold temperatures since have produced a 10 inch sheet. TThat's well ahead of last year. Last year I made my final video on January 19 and at that time we just barely had 9 inches of ice.

Anyway, I'm sure things will be totally different again next year. Please make sure to come back!

Here again is that paper on lake ice. It is a very interesting read: http://lakeice.squarespace.com/ice-formation/;jsessionid=B898F07D6ED54D0CAC31C2AE3FF85716.v5-web004
